I've just started to put together a couple of forces for SoN rules (figures all painted already) and I was totting up points for artillery when it dawned on me that although artillery costs different points, except for heavy artillery going slower, they all have the same stats: hit 5+ shot / 4+ canister and roll the same number of dice, thus making a 4 pounder the same as a 12 pounder. Have I missed a section in the rules or misread something? |

Question answered. It's the ranges. Don't know how I missed it. |

Really should be sopmething for the morale impact of the larger guns, I'm content to treat the killing power of both as similar in a game like SoN but a 12pdr is way more scary. |

Hmm interesting. Would I have feared canister rounds more from a 12lb over a 6lb at say, 300 yards, 200 yards, 100 yards? In the civil war both guns packed 27 iron ball in a canister round. So no difference. The 12lb ball was I believe a little bigger, but size won't really change things much. So it seems to come down to Diameter and spread based on barrel width. I would think at a greater distance the spread of the 12 comes into play and thus more Casualties. But once you are in close enough, the spread will have less impact, I would think. So I think I would fear both about equally with canister. |

The real question is what effect is the artillery fire having upon the unit's ability to remain under control of it's leaders. How many casualties being produced is only one factor in determining an answer to that question. Casualties alone is not a determining factor. On the receiving end, does it matter if you are killed by a 6 or 12 pound round?….You are still dead. Best to remember that dead men don't check morale! 8>) |

I agree you're probably dead no matter the cannon calibre if hit, but far, far more were not hit and the firing signature of a 12 pounder will be more impressive / scary. |

Well it definitely acts as a distraction in keeping the targeted soldiers from focusing on what they need to be doing at that time. It makes the unit's leadership's job more difficult keeping the unit functioning towards it's current mission. |

Ainīt the number of balls in a 12pounder canister higher than in a smaller gun? We are talking napoleonics here. And the number of dying and wounded should have a moral impact, cause they tend to make disturbing noises, I guess. |
