Looking at a new period, so looking for info. Soviets I am assuming retain the same organisation from the German front? Japanese I cannot believe is the same as those used in Burma, or the ones used on the islands against the Americans? Cheers Jon |

Watch the movie The Last Emperor for inspiration. YouTube link And this is interesting: link As I understand it the Japanese Army was organized in standard units and those were deployed in Japan and in China. The islands were usually specialized units designed specifically for the task and size and importance of the particular island. Good luck on the project. Mike Bunkermeister Creek |

The Soviets would be using the 1939 "shtat" (TOE), which was more generous than later ones. So, for example, howitzer brigades in the Rifle divisions. Also, given the distances involved from Moscow, the units in the Far East tended to be kept up to strength, as it was difficult to reinforce them. I've no idea about the Japanese, who had several different division organizations. |

I think the Japanese army at Khalkhin Gol might have had square (four regiment) infantry divisions but the unit that saw the most action – 23 Infantry Division – was formed in 1938 and I believe was a triangular (three regiment or "B" – i.e. standard) infantry division |

David M. Glantz. August storm: the Soviet strategic offensive in Manchuria. To conduct an operation against Japan in 1945, the USSR transferred experienced troops from Europe (400 thousand soldiers – 25 rifle divisions, three cavalry, 5 tank, 1 motorized. 4 rifle brigades, 1 airborne, 14 artillery) were also transferred. Also on the side of the USSR were the troops of the Mongolian Republic.
Russian documentary film on the topic (from the series about the Great Patriotic War). Turn on English subtitles. YouTube link |

Are we talking 1939 or 1945? |

I assumed 1939, but I can't really say why. Probably because I'm more interested in that one than 1945. |

There is a Russian book "Tanks at Khalkin Gol". Author – Maxim Kolomiets. It contains sufficiently detailed information about the organization and forces of the parties to the conflict. But – only in Russian. The book is posted online. If you want, you can translate the information of interest through Google translator. link |

Looking into the battle at Khalkhin Gol/Nomonhan Yes agree completely. The OOP Company Conflict Games made a great war game on this topic. I played it many times. Very good idea on how that conflict was fought, the use of armor, etc. in the early days before WWII … link |

The Japanese were totally outmatched by Russian armour in both 1939 and 1945. In fact, they would have had their hands full in 1945 had the Russians been using their 1939 kit. |
