I was wondering how many figures I should use for a "typical" regimental unit for (54mm) US, Br, Fre & "Hessian". I'm not gaming but rather i'm starting to do some painting of some spare figures I have lying around for my covid project. Any input is appreciated.

Six to eight infantry, four cavalry, and two gunners per gun is visually nice and allows you to game in a modest space.
Those with more space, money and time may do things in "the grand manner." Whatever floats your boat! :)

I generally shoot for 16 rank and file figures and one command element--either an officer, a musician or a standard bearer. Then I try to do three of a type. Most tables can accommodate suitable fire and movement distances based on a unit frontage of 8 54mm castings, and if I have a size humongous table available a regiment of 51 foot figures and a mounted officer is seriously impressive.

Mine have 12. I would probably prefer 16 to 18.

Thanks for all the suggestions!

Robert – Do you use 4 bases of 2x2 figures?

79thPA – 3 bases of 2x2?

Thanks,
Cort

Individually mounted.

Individually mounted. Outside of my CLS armies, 1/72 and larger are individual, and 10mm and under are on multiple-casting bases. (No 15/18mm left.)

I use individually mounted figures on a 40mm round base and use a movement tray from Litko. I use 6 and 10 figure movement trays.

I wouldn't go any smaller than 12 figures if you want the unit to look like a regiment.

Thanks for the answers to my basing question.
