Hello, How many guns would be part of and artillery company? My guess is it is a battery of guns with six pieces. But I am unsure. I am looking at a Princton 1777 OOB and I see… Eastern Company, New Jersey State Artillery—Capt. John Niel 2nd Co of Art, Philadelphia Associators—Capt. Joseph Moulder New York State Company of Artillery—Capt. Alexander Hamilton Wondering how many guns are we taking about Thanks |

The number of guns would vary greatly between companies and engagements. Based on the order of battle for Trenton fought only days earlier, link , it would appear that a company may only have 2-3 guns each. |

A lot of early war companies had 2 guns but some had 4. A 4 gun battery was probably a mix of light field guns and howitzers. The Eastern and Western Jersey companies were authorized to be 6 gun companies but I do not know if they actually fielded that many. It would be unusual if they did. |

From memory the British, at least, did not have guns permanently assigned to a company. They were assigned at the beginning of a campaign season so there was a lot of variation. Even if the Americans did have guns that stayed with a company there could be lots of variation based on prior combat, horses lost to illness, detachments, etc. I would try to find an OB for a particular battle to set of the scenario as Rakkasan suggests. |
