From 1880: Charles Adiel Lewis Totten's Strategos, complexe ACW wargame rules that inspire David Wesely and Gary Gygax in the 60's.

Again Paskal, too bad you don't live in the US. I have 2 sets of rules from then I would sell you, one being Jeb. We used to play Jeb.

Allow me to help out…..

Paskal is not looking for a specific rule set, he is simply looking for rule sets for the ACW published prior to 1976. Either as collector or gamer he is only interested in very old rule sets.

(Obv English is his second language)

"Hard Tack" and "Grand Army" come to mind. 1971 & 1975, respectively. Both USA written and published in USA. LOU Zocchi did HT, Don Lowry & Peter Rice GA.

BTW, I still have a LOC to Peter Rice.

Rally Round the Flag by S. Craig Taylor was published in the early 70s, and reprinted in 78, 82 and 88. Was a popular rule set at the time, when most folks played with Airfix figures, but was overtaken in my area by Stars and Bars by Scotty Bowden and then Johnny Reb by John Hill with the rise of 15mm figures (didn't need to rebase, just buy new figures).

Thank you all, it's not for collecting, but I find that the game systems before 1976 are more interesting because they are more outdated, etc… If you know of any others, please indicate it.

I don't recall the exact publishing date in the Courier, but On To Richmond is from near that time.

Stars and Bars by Scotty Bowden. First edition was printed in the late 70's somewhere – don't know if it predates 1976 or not.

Stars and Bars is pretty convoluted.

J.E.B. would be a better choice.

Any rules by Neil Thomas would be just what you are looking for as they all pretty much have an "Old School" flavor.

The Featherstone war game book has ACW rules, as does the Terry Wise introduction to battle gaming.

For the moment I would like information to make my choice later, thank you.

But I think the older it gets, the more I like it.

There was an Airfix set of ACW rules but I don't recall who wrote them.

Edit I looked them up they are The Airfix guide to the American Civil War by Terence Wise.
