You were asked – TMP link What if the Staufenberg Plot Had Succeeded?23% said "Doenitz assumes power, war ends sooner" 18% said "civil war in Germany, war ends abruptly" 14% said "Goring assumes power, war ends the same" |

I don't think Doentiz would have assumed power. At that time Goring was still the heir apparent. |

But the plot was not just to kill Hitler, it was to replace the Nazi regime with a govt that might just be able to achieve a negotiated peace with the Western Allies (at least that was the idea). Himmler and the SS (maybe Goering's Luftwaffe) would have been the only likely opposition to what was basically an Army putsch. Many a book or chapter written on this idea, all giving prominence to Rommel, but the plotters needed politicians at the top to be credible as a legitimate government. |

Doenitz was a real Nazi. I dont see, why he would have ended the war earlier. And Goering was pragmatic. It is possible, that he would have tried some peace negotiations. |

To be fair, while Doenitz was a hard core Nazi he was not an idiot; he was pragmatic in moving as many German soldiers and citizens as he could out of the reach of the Red Army – but I suspect that he would not have been at the top of the plotter's list as head of government |

If they did take out the top nazis I still don't see why Donitz would have become the leader. Why him over a number of other army, political or naval leaders. He was no one special just the guy Hitler chose to follow him after he turned on Goring. |

We have the government list of the Stauffenberg plot and it wasnt Rommel, that they had in mind. Chief of state: Generaloberst Ludwig Beck (former chief of Generalstab) Chief of Wehrmacht: Generalfeldmarschall Erwin von Witzleben (former Army chief West) Reichskanzler: Goerdeler (former mayor of Leipzig). There are many arguments, why the plot would have failed even if Hitler had been killed. Mostly that the Wehrmacht was so changed with young, pro-Nazi officers, that they wouldnt have followed the old generals of the plot. But, for example, the arrest of the party and SS leaders in Paris did work, so maybe? link A false stamp of the british propaganda with Witzleben. |
