If a Lt. Colonel were to attain a Doctorate which is the correct form? If the same person has gallantry medals such as the DSO, CGC, which are carried on letter heads etc. which is also true for academic study such as Bsc and Masters degrees and in our example a Phd. how would that be written? cheers jon |

For the US Army, on active duty, then the rank would be used first on formal letterhead or documents. So, Lieutenant Colonel John Smith, PhD. Also acceptable would be John Smith, Lieutenant Colonel, US Army, PhD. You could the abbreviation LTC for less formal documents. It's different for a retired officer. My brother uses John Smith, PhD, LTC (ret) |

So is that Lt Col Dr John, or Dr Lt Col John? I guess the former… |

I can only speak to the US Army. I'm sure other countries have different rules. The title of "doctor" associated with a PhD for active duty personnel is not used. They would be referred to simply as LTC John Smith in conversation or as "LTC John Smith, PhD" in writing. The medical community is different. Formal correspondence usually is written LTC (doctor) John Smith and while on the floor of the hospital or clinic patients and some staff will refer to the officer simply as "doctor". But out of that environment, they are referred to solely by their rank. |
