In realizing the potential of large skirmish level games like Sharp Practice and Rebels & Patriots, I'm doing some preliminary research into possibly setting up New York regiments vs the BIF games, where the Trent Affair spirals out of control and Anglo-Canadian forces invade the Niagara frontier in early 1862; a remake of the War of 1812.

Problem is I know next to nothing about the Union forces. I recently bought several Osprey books on Union forces, but its kinda barebones for what I'm looking for.

Essentially:
a) What is a good reference for uniform plates or even text descriptions if I want to just look at non-NYC New York regiments like the 21st and 100th?
b) Is there any possibility to find out what regiments would be stationed at the Buffalo, New York/Canada border? If not, would a Union state regiment leave behind a
"depot battalion" where it was initially recruited?
c) Same thing for Anglo-Canadian regiments: any idea where I could find out what units were initially mobilized or sent to Canada?

Thanks!

Check any book on the US regulars, Who gain a large number of recruits from British Regiments in Canada.

The US would need to transfer forces from the South to the Canadian border. So I would paint them as you paint any US Army unit in the ACW. If the US temporally sends two corps to the border. Unless the British are stupid and they are not, that would be the end of it.

I doubt seriously that there were any troops stationed on the border with Canada at the time. And, no, Volunteer regiments did not have a depot battalion to continue recruiting, which is one reason why the regiments dwindled down from the initial 1000+ men to 3 or 4 hundred after a few months in the field. At best, they occasionally sent an officer or two home to do some recruiting during quiet periods (and maybe some such officers, or men/officers recovering from wounds might have been in the area at the time of any such invasion from Canada, as at least one officer was at St. Albans, VT, when Confederates raided it from Canada later in the war.)

New York state did keep up its militia during the war better than most northern states, so you might look into the militia regiments from that area.
