Does anyone know in what regiment Friedrich von Münchhausen was commissioned? Even McGuire just states that he was 'Hessian' and seconded to Howe's staff. I was thinking of doing a command vignette for Howe with a figure representing Münchhausen and I am curious if anyone knows what regimentals he *might* have worn. I have absolutely no idea how German officers did things. |

In his report on Germantown in 1777 he listed he was offered a position in the British Army by Howe but that he hoped to have a position under his "sponsor" Gen von Junghiem in Cassel where he was hoping to have a company assigned to him (better than a major in the British Army) For the Battle of Short Hills in 1777 he is listed as an aide to Gen Howe In BRITISH, GERMAN, AND LOYALIST OFFICERS IN THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION Copyright 1990 There is a listing for Von Munchausen, Fred. Ernst Captain Landgrave Page 38 However I only have the index – not the book link |

Looking a little further it appears that he was Hessian Howes Adjunct from 1776 – 1778 At General Howes Side 1776 1778. The diary of General William Howes aide de camp, Captain Friedrich von Muenchhausen link So ultimately I would put him in a generic hessen-kassel officers uniform – if you dont find anything |

Twenty-three-year-old Captain von Muenchhausen had been appointed aide-de-camp to Sir William Howe on November 18, 1776, to facilitate communication between Howe, who spoke only English, and General Leopold von Heister, the Hessian commander at the time, who spoke only German and French. |

Thanks for the help, and all of that extra info, I actually find it funny that Howe didn't have any French. I would have thought it expected for someone of his background. I guess at least I'm justified in giving Münchhausen something a bit different. I was thinking of using the Eureka SYW Saxon cheveauléger officer figure since it has those lace tassels that some Hessian officers seem to have worn. |

Muenchhausen was was in the Hessian Leib Regiment, mentioned in Kipping and Smith's book mentioned above. Really interesting book, too. Has all the numbers of embarked troops for the Philiadlephia campaign. Leib regiment was a blue coat, yellow facings and cuffs, yellow small clothes, and silver brandenbourgs HOWEVER, he was appointed a wing adjutant, and may have worn the "Officer ala Suite" uniform, which was a blue coat with no facings, and red collar and cuffs, and yellow buttons. Small clothes were still yellow. |
