Hi Colonists! Do any of you fine fellows happen to know how the 5th Maryland regiment were uniformed in 1776/7? I guess I will have to do a conjectural flag for them too, unless you know different? I hope you have more info than me…thanks in advance! |

My best guess would be grey or brown coats faced with green as the 6th Regiment, then by Brandywine blue coats with red facings. |

The Fifth Maryland Continental Infantry regiment was not in existence in 1776. In 1777 possibly brown coats faced red. That is based on one deserter description that shows up in two different sources though. |

Thanks all, I think I will go with Brown faced red. Bill N, I agree they were not a Continental regiment till December 27th 1776 link …but fought at Long Island in late August 1776, I presume, as a State regiment? I will probably go with a generic flag since info on Flags for the continental army seems…scarce!!! |

Unless you accept the position that the 7 Independent Companies that Maryland sent to Washington in the summer of 1776 were designated the 5th Maryland, I am skeptical that the 5th was present at Long Island. Even if you do, the bulk of those Independent Companies missed the battle. The bulk of the Maryland Continental casualties at Long Island were suffered by Veazy's 7th Independent Company, along with the 3rd, 4th, 6th and 9th companies of Smallwood's regiment. Most sources claim that the 7 Independent Companies formed the basis of the 2nd Maryland Regiment of 1777. Richardson who became commander of the 5th Maryland Regiment of 1777 had commanded the Maryland 4th (militia) regiment of Flying Camp in 1776. Richardson joined Washington's Army in September of 1776. For the process Richardson went through in staffing the 5th for 1777 you might want to check this out. link |

link Where some of the confusion about the 5th on Long Island may come from the fact that in addition to the 1st Maryland – one of the independent companies was the 5th a part of the flying camp (I don't believe that the 5th independent company was the 5th Regiment) |

Thanks for the excellent info guys, you have put Wikipedia to shame! I love the comments about officers in your link Bill N! I will only deploy the 'Dandy 5th' in 1777-8 in deference to your excellent comments! I know where to go if I have any more queries re my Continental army!!! |
