Hi there, I pretty new to this kind of wargaming and got hooked up by Team Yankee. I bought the Iranian and Iraqi Starter Pack and ordered the same models from GHQ. So, I want to try out if like 15mm or 6mm more. Besides this, the Team Yankee scale or organization is a bit eh for my taste. For what I understood, it's played on battalion level but the models which act as a "unit" are companies. So, if I buy a complete company of T-72 tanks for the Iraqis, all 10 are grouped and clogged up together. So, there is no differenciation between plattoons. (I do like the 1:1 scale where 1 model represents e.g. 1 vehicle) I'm not sure what exactly I'm looking for, but I would love to have a game where I can move individual platoons around while maintaining the 1:1 representation of the models. I also did some research and know about the classic recommendations like Spearhead, A Fistful of TOW or Modern Micro-Armour: The Game but even though I like the 6mm scale, I don't like the operational level approach. I also heard about Battlegroup Modern Wargaming or Challenger 2000 but I can't find a valid resource to download/buy them. I think, those rulesets would be more to my liking. Can you confirm that? I'm also not sure if I'm able to play the 1st Gulf War with those 2 rulesets! On Wargamevault I found Manoeuvre Group and 1 of the 2 comments praises the system quite a lot and it sounds as it could be to my liking. Does anyone play it here? Thanks in advance! BR, Thorsten |

You might give a look at Battlegroup Northag. 1:1 figures but you maneuver squads and platoons. I'm a Fistful of TOWs player myself, but Northag gets a lot of positive mentions around here. |

Fistful of Tows has a chapter in the rule book for adapting the rules to 1:1 scale. A new version of Cold War Commander is being released by Pendrakon. Though written for one vehicle = a platoon, many players also use it at one-to-one scale. |

I like the BG Northag rules a lot and they might tick the boxes for you too. Of course you will need mods to model forces outside of the UK-USSR lists in the book. BG Centag which should bring in US and German kit and has been in the works for a while – supposed to have dropped by now – but I have not heard anything recently. Covid-related delays with production I suspect. |

I'm a big fan of Challenger/Challenger II/Challenger 2000 and think it is the best simulation out there, but like everything else it has strengths, weaknesses and a few warts. Probably best for someone with a military background in modern warfare and detail oriented. As you observed, it's long out of print, but you can find copies for sale. pjm |

Try Battlefront WW2, there is a complete section that uses the WW2 rules for moderns. The scale is at the squad level, one stand of two figures is a squad three of those make platoon etc, one tank is really two and two or three tanks is actually a tank platoon. |

OK thank you guys! I found all relevant Battlegroup Modern Wargaming files in a group (? not Yahoo, but something else) yesterday. As always, much information, but what I saw: No Iraq/Iran data available. I also had a look at Battlegroup NORTHAG which supports atm only UK/Russia as DColtman said. Since I'm not experienced with all the equipment and stuff, this has to wait until CENTAG or some later releases are available. (I found nothing on CENTAG). Regarding Battlefront, Cold War Commander and a Fistful of TOWs: I wasn't able to look into that. (I will of course, but wanted to give you feedback since you recommended so much ^^) |

Well you could look at us:- link But Team Yankee it is not! We don't have lists for period and 1/300 would not be our reccomended scale, but we have played at this scale. We don't have army lists for this period however the specs can be built up from actual vehicle data in a well defined way, covered in the rules. I mention it as its 1:1 for vehicels and infantry in fire teams. To some it is beyond the pale as it does require the turrets of tanks to be pointed in the required direction so you get the formation effects. That why iots not ideal at 1/300 for small vehicels, its OK with tanks but very small AFV's often dont have turning turrets so you would have to improvise. Also no points system. Equal sides as played by points systems are a pure fiction when placed on real world terrain. Tigers vs infantry does not work in a thick forrest. Plus if you don't want to considere sensible things like hull down, smoke dischargers, buttoned or unbuttoned tanks then we are not for you. As always don't buy till you have looked at the free stuff. We publish for fun not really profit. If you want soemthing that plays fairly near the real thing and models the tactical problems of a platoon of either tanks or Infantry or even more fun a company battlegroup there is nothing comes even close (in my humble opinion). We have been playing the same system for 14 years and still hold good. |
