I am testing the waters of Age of Sigmar, but I am completely confused about what to buy. It's kind of overwhelming.

I am an old wargamer going back to last century. I am not sure if the problem is my age, or confusion about Age of Sigmar.

A friend want to purchase the Nighthaunts/Stormcast boxed set. He really needed Nighthaunts, so I took Stormcast. I really wasn't interested in playing.

I was just helping him. Now I learned this is a previous version. I decided to try AOS, but I am lost about what books I need, what figs to buy. Very frustrated. Nothing in the boxed set (Stormcast) is not very good.

So I have decided to buy Skaven. Which clan, which books to buy, which figs, etc.

1-You need the latest version of the Core AOS Rulebook (came out last year) ( link ) ..OR.. The Generals Handbook 2021 (https://www.games-workshop.com/en-US/Generals-Handbook-Pitched-Battles-EN-2021) which has the core rules in it plus additional material (but no background fluff and I think it doesn't contain the Battleplans (scenarios) from the Core rulebook). You'll also want the Generals Handbook if you plan on doing matched-play (tournaments) as it contains updated match-play rules

2) You will each need the army list book (Battletome) for your army:

Skaven: link (note that this was published in 2019, so a new one will becoming out probably this year or next year).

Nighthaunts: A new Nighthaunt Battletome will be released in a couple of weeks-GW pulled the old version from their web storefront.

If you are just playing against your friend that should be all you need. If you want to use Endless Spells in your games I think you will need the Malign Sorcery boxed set plus the Generals Handbook which has updates.

That should be it.

…OR…. You could use your AOS models with the FREE Age of Fantasy rules, which are like a poor man's AOS. link The Skaven are called Ratmen and Nighthaunt are Ghostly Undead. All of GW's armies are covered as well as armies that GW abandoned when they got rid of WHFB (like Wood Elves and Chaos Dwarves). There's also a skirmish version that only uses a handfull of models on each side.

Or you can try Kings of War. They have free rules covering a lot of armies including undead and humans.

Also, apparently before we all die, GW is meant to be bringing back fantasy with The old world. Hopefully this will be better than AOS… At least our great great grandchildren may enjoy it.
