Of course … he's running out of bodies to throw into the meatgrinder. Russia is even recruiting in Nepal. They join to get paid to feed their families. It appears Russia is using them as cannon fodder, like much of the Russian units. It would seem many of these Nepalese don't make it back home. No real surprise there …

Yes, Nedd, thank you but I'm very much aware of the Gurkha units in the British Army. And their history. It has been that way for a very long time. And yes, they come from Nepal too. I don't think any former Gurkhas are in Putin's Forces ? IIRC after serving 20 years the Gurkhas can become British citizens.

There really is nothing wrong with the Russians recruiting from Nepal or anywhere else. However, in the current situation with the Russian Military taking very high losses, 300,000 IIRC. Recruiting these men from Nepal seems like desperation. These men from Nepal are an entirely different concept/idea than the UK's Gurkhas units.

You may want to read up on the Gurkhas. The Gurkhas in the UK's Military vs. these Nepalese being recruited to be cannon fodder for Putin are two very different situations.

The report I saw said many of these men from Nepal have a high lose rate like many of the Russian Infantry units, etc. The Nepalese Gov't is a bit concerned with these men being used a cannon fodder, etc. Again, the CNN report said.

Again, this seems to be desperation on the Russians part. As again they have taken huge loses.

BTW – There was Plt of Gurkhas in the US Honor Guard Co. in Seoul. When I was in the ROK, '84-'85. Didn't see them much … But were part of the UN Forces that still support the UN mission in the ROK.

wardog – I don't think any North Korea units were sent to support Russia's invasion. However, the Nork Koreans have sent ammo, ordinance, etc. But not AFVs, etc. AFAIK …

"You may want to read up on the Gurkhas"

Actually a member of my family fought with the Gurkhas through ww2 Monty Casino been one of the campaigns they went through together. He always spoke highly of the Gurkhas when reminiscing, and after his death in 2012 we found out he had been financially contributing to supporting Gurkha veterans since 1950s. So I know about the Gurkhas thank you.

They were fighting nazis too.

Personal logo Legion 4 Supporting Member of TMP22 Feb 2024 6:13 p.m. PST

That is interesting, may he RIP. And of course, I agree, everything I have read or heard the Gurkhas are very highly thought of. They are excellent warriors.

And yes, I know they were fighting the Nazis. As my Father did as an Infantry SGT with the US 90ID in France.

Whole?… without any consequences of war or injury?… maybe less… but it seems that no one in Russia cares about the casualties… it is as if they swallowed the story of fighting in WW2 again…

Armand

35thOVI Supporting Member of TMP02 Apr 2024 5:11 a.m. PST

Tango, Legion, I said this before. It takes a tremendous amount of casualties to have any impact on the Russians. To my knowledge it only happened once that they rebelled against them, WWI. The casualties also have to impact those in Russia who are capable of impacting those in power. My guess, that is not the case today.

Personal logo Legion 4 Supporting Member of TMP02 Apr 2024 8:30 a.m. PST

Putin will continue to find bodies to throw into the meatgrinder. That is why it is so very important for the US and NATO to keep sending Ukraine all the weapons they need. The Ukraine is a better force overall. If they have the weapons to continue to attrite the Russians, tha5t may make all the difference, IMO.

Again, IMO the US leadership was dragging its feet in sending the Ukraine all the assets they need over a year ago.

Tango01 Supporting Member of TMP02 Apr 2024 12:17 p.m. PST

I understand that living in an autocracy like the Russians is not easy… especially for those who do not have the money or the political power to complain… but I innocently believed that in this new century and after having tasted the difference from living in peace a certain progress with new technologies, etc. people there would know how to demonstrate when their loved ones were senselessly exterminated… only those who are in power or are extremely ignorant can sustain this war … and those are not who walk to the front line…

I must also say that I have been very disenchanted by the attitude of the rest of Europe… I expected a much stronger, more demonstrative and committed union from certain countries that gave so much for freedom… not only in Russia are there people who want to return to those dark Nazi days…

Russia has lost so many men and so much equipment in the past 2 years. It is somewhat amazing … It appears possibly they will be down to mostly conscript light infantry within another 6 months ?

No surprise there. It is great propaganda, etc. for these "trophies of war" for the population of Russia to see how well the war is going. Even if it is not …

Many dead sons, brothers, etc. will never be seen by their mothers again. Putin will/has to show something to demonstrates these "deaths will not be in vain". Even if it a lie …
