Good stuff. I am struck by the difference in how soem troops dressed in VN vs Iraq/Afghan. Not the uniforms, but in the pics of VN, there was a lot of shirtsleeves/ no shirts. Even in combat situations---the tank guy and the arty guys. |

Nice Find, Wolfhag. Had seen one or two of those, but the rest were new. Brought back memories best forgotten. Semper Fi Sam |

I remember seeing that issue back when we had a subscription. Pretty stark. |

People underestimate the impact of Life magazine. At that time, our news was 30 minutes of national news, and 30 minutes of local news per evening. Most magazines such as Time, Newsweek, and the dreary-looking US News & World Report were about 8 1/12 x 11 inches. But Life was about twice as big, and filled with big color photos. Life was how a lot of us saw the Vietnam War, and unlike the nightly news, the Life photos stayed on the coffee table. Go find the Mi Lai Massacre edition of Life. Unlike today, there was no blurring of unpleasantness like there is today. Seeing photos of women and babies dead in a ditch absolutely had an impact on public opinion. |
