Fantastic painting except the hair, that stands out because the rest is so good. The tunic has actual texture and I don't know if it's the painting or sculpt but the spear shaft gives the impression of being shaped by hand with a blade. It's one of those paintjobs that look better the more times you see it. |

'tis a shame that the whole Briton/Pict woad body paint/tattoo thing is a myth because this is well rendered. link Cheers, John |

John, if you're looking for historical accuracy then these sorts of models are generally bad for ancient times. The sword here looks viking period, the belt buckle looks made up, the sword's being worn on the wrong side of the body, the tunic/dress has a split in the front at the collar which there is zero evidence for, the terminals on the torc should be perpendicular to the neckring, not lie on the same plane as it, unless the fibula is iron then I'd expect more decoration for a high status person; it's rather plain. The sculpt and painting are beautiful but neither the sculptor nor painter knew much about ancient Britain in the first century ad. Boudicca was described as wearing a multi coloured dress, she was the leading figure of the Iceni who up until the Roman repression had been a Roman client kingdom with coins modeled on Roman ones. It's highly likely that the tribal elite had access to cloth from the Empire as well as their own local patterns. |
