I am wanting to find a game that comes with the following, 1) A backgrounds story 2) Set of rules to go with it 3) dedicated line of figures made for the game. It can be historical, Sci-Fi, Alternative history or fantasy. Examples of what I am talking about would be Wild West Exodus (background story, rules and figures) Empire of the Dead by West Wind (background ect.) Incursion (this one come with a board which is okay) Fallout by Modiphius Panzerfaust Flintloque Any ideas are welcome! |

Yes to all 3 desiderata on "The Silver Bayonet", a mash-up of Napoleonic skirmish and Gothic Horror. There are some threads and battle reports here on TMP (Black Powder Fantasy board), and here's a site with lots more pics of people's units, game reports, etc: link |

Just started playing "Silver Bayonet". Has all you request. It is a skirmish game and relatively cheap to get into. |

Anno Domini 1666 fits the bill nicely and I highly recommend it. One aspect I really like is that you can play it as straight alternate history, or add in the various elements of fantasy as desired. So, for example, if you want alchemy but no monsters, that totally works. Or if you only want things like demons and golems, but not basilisks and werewolves, that also works. Edited to add a link to the US distributors (who are really good guys): link |

Welcome to historical miniatures gaming, where every set of rules and miniatures reflects a backstory! The major ones are more elaborate even than Games Workshop. But why would you want "figures dedicated to the game" in the fantasy/SF sense of "works with these rules only"? Usually means that five years later either you can't buy more figures, or the copyright holder has changed the army lists--again. Fortunately for historical miniatures gaming, you can't copyright French Napoleonic infantry. |

I bought Silver Bayonet just to peruse the rules. While there are 6 "fixed" factions and a pretty simple list of "monster" types, the rules contemplate customizing additional factions and monster types. I actually think morphing Silver Bayonet to a post Napoleonic world would be more interesting. Monsters and fell influences bred in the crucible of a continent at war for a generation walk abroad in a world of civil chaos. Governments attempting to restore order with tens of thousands of refugees and displaced veterans wandering the landscape in search of employment. There is a really awful movie called Peterloo that follows the travails of a British Waterloo ranker after being mustered out. He was given passage back to England, paid off, and dumped on the street in his uniform. He ran out of money trying to get back home. He had to walk most of the way home, sick and malnourished. He stumbled thru his parent's door, half dead, his clothes in tatters. Just imagine New Orleans in 1818 with influences from every corner of the world colliding head on with Voodoo, loup garou, swamp pirates, transplanted Bonapartists and, worst of all, Americans. I'm reminded of how one of LaFitte's men described himself. "I am a Frenchman by birth, a Jew by persuasion and an American by convenience." |

SAGA Small armies for a fun skirmish game. And the armies play very differently from one another. |

All historical games fit your three criteria by default. Backstory….the war Set of rules…probably mention the particular war or period on the front cover Dedicated range of figures…probably mention the war or period in title of the range. |

Thanks. I do have sliver bayonet and some of the figures. To answer several questions or points made Robert: Why do I want figures that can only be used for that game? because I do. I like the idea that I can only get the figures from one company. I like to collect. Plus I will get everything I need now so won't care if they are not around in five years. Just me. Bod: You are correct. Historical does have all that. So I guess I am not looking for historical. More alternative or weird history or fantasy/sci fi. I just looked at Hell Dorado. It is out of publication but you can still get everything. But the figures are expensive and hard to put together and not sure of all the written material has been put into English. Also looked at Confrontation but didn't like the figures. |

HMS Exeter, you should read Barbara Hambly's Benjamin January novels, set in New Orleans from about 1830 on. I think the only thing on your list she hasn't done is the loup garou, and she's done quite a few you haven't thought of. Plenty of skirmish/RPG material. |
