Is there an option to field Human Mercenary Pikemen in AoS like there used to be in Whfb? If so, where are the Mercenary unit stats found? Cheers. |

There sure are! On the back of a beer mat. Get scribbling. Just like there are similar rules for the giant chaos feline that attacks when ever dice are rolled. Just use basic human stats, if that exists for AOS, with spears. Maybe add some range for pikes. Bazinga. Personally, I'd add a roll for when they suffer a wound/lose a fight, if it rolls a 6 they switch sides and are controlled by the other side stating their next turn. That could compensate for the pikes increased range, and add some chaotic flair. |

Maybe in the old "Grand Alliance:Order" handbook. When I had the 2nd edition AoS app on my tablet, it had the War Scrolls (statlines) for things like Empire Knights and such (so it might have had pikes). I've since replaced that app with the 3rd edition version and it no longer has the War Scrolls for miniatures GW no longer makes. Best you can do is Freeguild Spear. Oh – the Lumineth Realm-lords (aka "High Elves") have Vanari Auralan Wardens (Elite troops) which use pikes. The pike statline is Rng:3", Atks:2, To Hit:3+, To Wound:4+, No Rend, Dmg:1. Note that the Freeguild Spear have 2" Rng and hit on 4+ and only 1 damage. So I think for Freeguild Pikes I'd say use the Spearmen stats and abilities (Massed Ranks and Wall of Spears) but change the weapon range to 3". I would apply an up cost on the Freeguild 85pts for 10 figures but I don't know how much … maybe 95 or 100 for a unit of 10? |

..or switch to Mantic's Kings of War. The Uncharted Empires Supplement has a list for the "Kingdoms of Men", which is basically a WHFB Empire clone. You can take a unit called Spear Phalanx and upgrade their spears to pikes, which gains them the Ensnare special ability (enemy is -1 when attacking the front of the unit). |

That's funny. What made you avoid that train wreak? It seems a sudden change of heart. Which edition of FB will you be using? I'm guessing you'd have to rebase for AOS anyway, or suffer odd looks from across the table, their eyes may be saying "you don't belong here, square", to which you could reply with a squint "I don't want to see you 'round anymore." And such nonsense. |

I started my Landsknecht collection (and obession) with my imperial WFB3 army, some 30years ago. Going back to a WFB version that emphasises infantry over monsters is worth it. I liked 8th edition and dubbled with 9th. Pikes never got some real love, except the odd Tilean mercenearies, but they could be adapted for friendly games without major problems. Or, in less words: Good decision, have fun! |

"That's funny. What made you avoid that train wreak? It seems a sudden change of heart. Which edition of FB will you be using?" Yeah i always liked the sound of Warhammer vs AoS based strictly on reviews. Plus I've played 40k and Warhammer Ancients so I'm familiar with the gaming system. All the polls for Whfb said 6th Ed was the best overall but I decided to go with 8th for various reasons. I paid a heap of gold for the 8th Ed Army books but its all good. 8th seems like a fun game and I'm looking forward to trying it. I'm picking up Dogs of War too so that I can use the Tilean Pikemen. Thanks all. |

The only Dogs of War army book for WHFB is that published for 5th edition back in 1998. Jolly good reading for the background material, but the rules won't help you much with 8th edition. After that, there was a "Ravening hordes" style DoW army list for 6th edition published in White Dwarf 251 (autumn 2000), with additional entries for the Regiments of Reknown in White Dwarf 252. Additionally, there were rules for two new Regiments of Reknown (Mengil's Manflayers and Ruglud's Armoured Orcs) in later issues. These all were compiled and reprinted also in Warhammer Annual 2002 and Warhammer Annual 2004 (also published in some parts of the world as Warhammer Chronicles). |

I surprised they never did a Dogs of War White Dwarf issue for armies after 5th Edition. I picked up the Dogs of War book for $30 USD so I'm hoping it will be easy to convert to 8th. |

I would suggest that you try to acquire a copy of the previsouly mentioned White Dwarf 251, which should not be too difficult to locate second-hand online. In the Dogs of War article inside you will find 6th edition rules (compatible with 8th) for: - pikes as weapons - generic Dogs of War units (pikemen, crossbowmen, duellists, light and heavy cavalry, norse marauders (berserkers), ogres, dwarves, halflings, hot-pot launcher and cannon) - how to field Dogs of War units as rare choices in other armies - how to field a pure Dogs of War army The additional content in White Dwarf 252 for the Regiments of Reknown (named, unique "special character" units) tends to be more specialised, so you can probably live without that unless you are looking for something more obscure such as the Birdmen of Catrazza. Trying to convert the 5th edition Dogs of War book information for the 8th edition is not a straightforward exercise, so I would not recommend that – especially since that book is largley restricted to Regiments of Reknown, with only very few generic entries. There is a fair amount of difference in army book design practices between the editions. As I said, the 5th edition Dogs of War book makes for a great background reading (though rather tongue in cheek at some points) and is technically very well prepared. Not quite sure I would pay $30 USD USD for it, though. |

A good discussion on pikes here: link |

"Stupid boy*." "pikes as weapons"
The next issue had a feature article on pikes as decorative table lamps. * Nobody panic. I'm talking Dad's Army. |
