This will be interesting

Watch the news….
Counter-protest planned after Confederate event approved at Stone Mountain Park (msn.com)

Please let us know. I quit watching TV news as it depressed me too much. Seriously. I loved listening to Market Place every afternoon. But Kye Rysdal could not stop talking about 'the War'.
And I quit watching the evening news for the same reason. Not even the weather!

I hope everyone ignores them and let's them have their small celebration and everything is a big nothing. Ignore it and it disappears for a another year.

But my gut says they won't.

What is the Confederate event? What are they doing?
I think that is relevant to knowing why people are protesting.

Ok now it is not showing, interesting.

So I will try a different one

According to the article they have done this for 18 years but beginning last year, suddenly it's a crisis.

Freedom of speech only means something if people you disagree with can speak. Otherwise it is unnecessary to have freedom for only those you agree with.

You cannot change minds if you don't engage with people in a civilized way.

The Confederate event is planned for Confederate Memorial Day, later this month. Stone Mountain is the site of a huge bas-relief of Davis, Lee, and Jackson.

Grel, yes obviously a Confederate monument. Just leave them alone and it will be like the previous 18 years. I just don't think they will leave them alone. That seems to be the pattern lately.

I heard a story from about 3 years ago. It's one of those stories that, if it isn't true, it should have been.

Some Antifa'y groups started an online buzz that they were planning to visit a cemetery in Missouri to defile the graves of some Confederate veterans.

Rising to the bait, a significant counter protest group showed up, including some well armed militia types. In truth the Antifa'y's had no intention of showing up.

Net result, one "weekend warrior" literally shot himself in the foot.

So we are then to hope that when the well armed BLM and Antifa counter protesters show up to protest this event, they will shoot themselves in the feet too? That would be fun and entertaining. 🙂

Murvihill05 Apr 2022 6:57 a.m. PST

So basically they're saying "We disagree with them so we're going to protest."
The people who died for the Confederacy are still dead, regardless of the rightness of their cause. Would you say "you can't put flowers on that person's grave because they committed suicide."?
Not justifying the Confederacy, in fact I believe they were wrong, but people should be allowed to grieve their loved ones and show respect to their ancestors.

Way to position yourself on the side of literal confederates, OVI.

Also, isn't protesting someone ALSO free speech?

Grattan54 Supporting Member of TMP05 Apr 2022 10:49 a.m. PST

Well, Stone Mountain might not be the best place to honor the Confederacy. It was here in the 1920s that the Ku Klux Klan was reborn after burning a cross.

It is a little bit like the Japanese deciding to honor Japanese soldiers killed in WW2 at Pearl Harbor. Or where the Bataan Death March took place. Location does matter.

"Also, isn't protesting someone ALSO free speech?"

Depends upon how you go about it. Ask the citizens of Portland, Seattle, St Louis, Kenosha, Minneapolis, Atlanta, etc …..

"Position myself on the side of literal confederates"? They still live? Thought the last died before I was born. 🤔 who said the South would not rise again? 😂

I would love to get into a discussion of the Confederacy, it soldiers, the Union and its soldiers, real beliefs and fallacies that are believed today, but this is not the thread for that nor do I have the time.

All I have said is that I hope their opponents will leave them alone. If no opponents had decided to launch counter protests, this would have never made the news. Confrontations like this in the last few years, Inevitably lead to violence from both sides.

Sort of like Little Bo Peep; Leave them alone and they'll go home, leaving their "tales" behind them.

HMS Exeter05 Apr 2022 3:54 p.m. PST

I earnestly hope we are in line for a pendulum swing back towards the middle. If you sense it starting, for goodness sake DUCK!

I can only hope.

Zephyr105 Apr 2022 9:15 p.m. PST

Well obviously, the protestors should show up in Union uniforms… ;-)
