I got bit by the Ottoman bug! On the game table, they are colorful, poor morale, and tend to do what ever they want, regardless of what I try to get them to do. My problem is, the lack of information in English. I have William Johnson's "Crescent Among Eagles" and I would like to contact William Johnson. If anyone knows him, please have him contact me at nmh16055 AT gmail DOT com. (To 'sweeten the pot', I recently asked George Nafziger. George said, that he doesn't have contact information, but if I can get it, I should pass it on to George--he has some royalty checks for William.) |

Not napoleonic specifically, but quite informative anyway: link |

Hey, Matt. Found another title more period specific (Cresent Among the Eagles was the title I could not think of.) There was a series of magazines called Dragoman. Will need to dig up an issue around here…. But here is another that George has in his lists: link Deals with Russians and Ottomans. Hope this helps. v/r Tom |

Tom, Thank you! I picked up the Nafziger book at the Seven Years' War Convention last week. If you find anything, I'll be out your way for West Wars in May. Hope to see you there. Matt |

I painted my Ottoman Army on a ship in the Persian Gulf during Desert Storm. Mostly Jacobites IIRC. |

Joe, Thank you! I hadn't seen "The Ottoman Army of the Napoleonic Wars, 1798-1815". Do you a copy? Do you recommend it? (I'm trying to determine if it's worth the $50. USD) Murvihill, Painted on a ship in the Persian Gulf during Desert Storm?!? I was in submarines--no room, no time, and the Corpsman would have freaked out with regard to bringing paint (an 'atmosphere contaminate') on board. My wife is just a little more tolerant than the Corpsman was. Matt |

Sorry, no, I do not. It perked my ears up when it came out because I have an interest in the Russo-Turkish wars during the Napoleonic period, but I did not want to spend the money. Perhaps I should. It will probably make me start buying a couple of armies. |

Those Helions are like cat-nip! Fortunately that one is due during June-2022 – enough time to to save up for it. NB. Helion seems to sell seconds at a good discount (in the UK at least) |

no doubt, Bruno Mugnai's expected forthcoming book at Helion, already on the wish list for many people, to buy the eyes closed and open them once the volume in your hands

THE NAPOLEONIC OTTOMAN ARMY Uniforms, Tactics and Organization Chris Flaherty ISBN: 978-1-85818-767-9 240mm x 170mm 180 pages, full colour Large format Hardback, colour uniform details on nearly every page. Detailed study that cuts through the confusing, derivative and downright rubbish about the later C18th & Napoleonic Ottoman forces This volume covers the uniforms, tactics and organization of the Ottoman standing army in the late 18th century and Napoleonic wars. The Ottoman's standing army was long established. The sipahi and deli cavalry constituted its main battlefield assault force, alongside paid regular janissary infantry, provincial government musketeer regiments; and the nizam-i-cedid – the new order army. Supported by a force of regular artillery, engineering and transport corps.
Chapters cover uniforms, insignia, and flags. Chapters also cover the standing army's composition, organization of its infantry, cavalry and artillery. Including its tactics used in the 18th century and Napoleonic period. This book contains a chapter on the organization, flags, ships, uniforms, tactics and armament of the Ottoman river fleets. |

Lilian, Thank you! I'll try to get the Flaherty book and look for the Helion when it comes out. (I still hope to find William Johnson, so George Nafziger can give him his royalty checks.) Matt |

'The Dragoman' – now there is a name from the past. If I'm not mistaken, there were only 4 or 5 of that magazine. I'll have to look in my library to make sure but I believe I've got all of them. The Flaherty book is highly recommended! |

buy with eyes shut and open them once the volume is in your hands LOL! A sentiment I could afford to entertain last year (*) Bruno Mugnai's Helion – Ottomans 1645-1718 book is very very good too. The illustration of a genisario in campaign dress was an eye opener (tunic, breeks, woollen benny cap) – yenicheri boerk cap only for parades. (*) I live in a country run by a government that hasn't offered a coherent nor competent energy policy over the last few decades. My monthly fuel costs have now (01-April) increased to GBP560 from GBP170 – because – for some unknown reason – we pay spot prices for fuel on the open market. We ought invade either one (or both) of Norway and Qatar. |

RUSSO-TURKISH WAR OF 1806-1812 By Lt Gen. Michailovsky-Danilevsky Translated by Alexander Mikaberidze Size: 11″ x 8.5″ Illustrations: numerous B&W maps Pages: Volume I – 149 pages Pages: Volume II – 156 pages $55 USD, soft cover, treated as one book for postage. To my knowledge this is the only work in English on this obscure Napoleonic campaign written by a Russian. It is a very detailed account of six years of warfare between the Ottomans and the Russians, supported with 15-20 maps per volume of the theater and detailed maps of the battles. It contains orders of battle for the Russians, but not for the Turks (sorry!) The both volumes are now available. |
