I'll start by saying I've always had good experience purchasing items from TMP members in the Market Place.

Assuming you purchase from the market Place, what is the best method of payment? I think most people prefer PayPal, and all of my purchases have involved the sending money to a friend option. Problem is, my credit card treats that as a cash advance an imposes rather high fees.

Is there a better option?

Thanks.

Wow. I wasn't aware of that. If I buy something, I buy it as a purchase. I prefer PayPal for sending and receiving money. The fee for getting money is just part of doing business. Can you just leave money in your account and pay from that?

I told PayPal to take it straight out of my checking account. You do want to make a note of it, of course.

I only ever pay using PayPal with purchase protection.

When I sell, I ask NOT to use the friend option because I cannot buy postage and ship from paypal with a friend payment. With a purchase payment I can get a discount USPS rate AND I can use Media Mail or First class, which I cannot do from the USPS site.

I never use the friend option on paypal. If you don't get the product you are just screwed. If a buyer won't take the paying for items or services option, their stuff is not that important to me.

Good point, Robert. I forgot that I have a checking account attached to PayPal as well.

Doesn't the friends option remove all buyer protections?

It does, so it's a bad idea to send someone you don't know just to save them 3% or so on the purchase.

Well, as I stated above, I've only used the friends and family option when buying here in the TMP Marketplace. And that's what the seller requested. Never had a problem receiving an item. I wouldn't do this anywhere else either.

I've seen people mention linking PayPal to their bank account. I'm not personally comfortable with that. I don't even do online banking. Do those that do this have a separate bank account just for PayPal purchases? I'd be worried someone could crack my password and empty out my account.

Exactly the same fear I had. So I opened a savings account, put in $100 USD and linked that to Paypal. Don't use it for anything else. From time to time I add a little to the account, but always keep it well under $500. USD If I'm planning a major purchase with paypal, I deposit some more to cover it. Have never had a problem, and if anyone breaks in, all they can get is whatever's left in the savings account. As long as I don't exceed 6 transactions going out of the account in a month, there's no bank charge. If it goes over 6, there's a $10 USD charge. I'm happy with it. Tom
