After many years away, I've re-injected time and money in this project. I've had a terrific time painting and learning and I've written this blog post about the figures available in 28mm.

A fascinating period that is certainly underrepresented in the miniatures field. Could you convert a figure or two to make them standard bearers? That is what I would do. Could you use Perry ACW plastics for easier conversion? Plastic is very easy to work with and I believe that you can buy individual sprues as well. Just my two cents. You have a nice collection!

Perris, I've done the standard bearer thing; I just don't like to do it.

I've never heard of Smyth Holdings, and I'm afraid I really don't understand who makes them.

KSmyth05 Mar 2022 6:26 p.m. PST

I didn't mean to be confusing but they are figures of that manufacturer in my collection. It's intended to verify I own what I'm reviewing.

Have you seen the new source books from TVAG

Yes I have. I mention them in the post.

KSmyth,
Thank you for the post, your blog article is very interesting. A question from an item on the blog, aren't the bigger FFL characters you thought were not available the ones in Foundry Old West packs OW171, 172, 173, and 174?

Cerdic06 Mar 2022 12:34 a.m. PST

Do you have a link for Smyth Holdings? Google is drawing a blank!

Then I can add them to the list…

Nice.

KSmyth06 Mar 2022 8:49 a.m. PST

Texaswalker--nope, these are absolutely not the same figures. The Old West packs have a very nice collection of figures, but definitely a different sculptor and they are much larger.

Cerdic--as mentioned previously, Smyth Holdings is not a manufacturer. They are my personal collection. It is my verification that I'm not reviewing something I don't own. Sorry, it's the journalism teacher in me.

Re. the TVAG 2 vol set: While I do not agree with some of the editorial choices that were made, it is the best single source about this war in English that I am aware of.

I agree that the figures available from TVAG look very disappointing and overpriced.

I am very interested in this war, but I do not want to piece together figures from different manufacturers hoping that things work out and, in 15mm, the old Freikorp line is not up to snuff either in my opinion.

I am afraid that "Smyth Holdings" doesn't clarify anything -- it makes things confusing, especially when you are naming manufacturers and "Smyth Holdings" is listed. I know it was not your intent, but it sent me down a rabbit hole looking for a figures manufacturer that doesn't exist.

Thank you for clarifying.

Thank you for shedding some light on this under-gamed conflict. Every time this war falls off my radar screen, someone brings it back up.

I have the TVAG figures. Too me they always have had charm. A nice feel of the past in wargaming figures. Painted up they look good.

I second Grattan54 on the TVAG minis. They have a certain old school charm. I also think the Austrian Legion aren't too bad. Once painted and based they look fine to my eye.

I too love to look at the Gringo40 minis, but they are just impossibly large in relation to the scale of my existing figures

Thanks for the figure summary!

My last comment here. I really appreciate you taking the time to read. I've been taken with this period for a long time and it is really a struggle to get all the units I'd like to have.

I started with the review as something small, but it became something of a rabbit hole, just like the project. I hoped to make it a fair assessment of what is available. I managed to completely overlook the Irregular range. I don't have any of their figures, and until a week ago I didn't know they existed. Dopey me.

About my figures, the Smyth Holdings. I make reference to my figures and photos of them as I introduced each maker. I make reference to the figures I own in the first person. I believed I was being direct in this matter and it was not my intention to be misleading in any way. I apologize for any confusion

All that said, every range I reviewed has its merits. Whether it is the completeness and availability of the TVAG range, the variety of the Foundry range, or the size and beauty of the Gringo 40's range, they all are worth a look.

Combining them is the problem. I've moved on from that and will just have them all out on the table at the same time. Some figures are fill ins and others are must-haves. I've made that agreement with myself. I understand if others are not in that place.

It is a fascinating period and I wish any who choose to go down this road the best of luck.

I certainly look forward to seeing more of your collection either in a game, or on display.
