Through the ages, soldiers have worn some ridiculous things on their bonce. What in your opinion is the most stupid, ludicrous, bonkers headgear?

Nope, it's the pickelhaube. Expensive and uncomfortable. Offers no protection from the elements or enemy weapons. Too absurd to be intimidating. Can't even store a brandy bottle in it.

Broad and floppy with feathers is the new black!

Some of the Meso-American stuff was pretty silly.

As was some of the Japanese stuff – I agree the pickelhaube is a bit daft – the Russian spiked helmet (the helmet of Yaroslav the Wise) was bigger and more intimidating, although I suspect even more uncomfortable to wear; at least for the North Koreans its only the brass hats that wear the thing; for the Janissaries and the Bersagilieri they all had to wear them!

Wasn't part of the idea was to help determine friend or foe at a distance in the middle of a battle?

The original concept behind the Pickelhaube was a good one. The spike was to deflect saber strikes and the spike base had 4 fingers that came down the sides of the helmet to protect the head. As it progressed it became more an item of style than one of protection.
