I think that lasers will become more common when we can work out how to create massive electric current, with very small power sources. As a result, I think that sci-fi should have lasers. Lasers mean that as long as you can generate electricity, you don't need to worry about ammunition… so it is an obvious choice for reducing weight and not overloading your troops. Lasers are still being worked on now… it makes sense that they will be improved to a point where they can be carried and lethal. |

Of course, though clouds of BBs or ball bearings will have their place too, until spacecraft get armored hulls or force shields. |
