It wasn't the Navy that pioneered top gun competitions, it was the US Air Force in 1949. And the winners were a team from the 332nd Fighter Group flying P-47N Thunderbolts against more modern P-51 Mustangs and P-82 Super Mustangs.

The Navy's Top Gun isn't a competition, it's a course for training air crews on how to fly in combat conditions. The formal title of the course is- Navy Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor. Attendees are ranked, but that's not the point- learning how to fly in combat is, including air to ground.

Kudos to the Tuskegee airmen, who were true heroes, but the title of the linked article is misleading.

Kudos to all the FG's, BG's, transport and the rest, they were all heroes. I'll won't single any one out, they all did their jobs. Well deserved praise.
