Haven't read it yet but looked through all the pictures and maps. Three battles examined: Westchester County (NY) throughout the war; Oriskany; and King's Mountain. Visually the book seems up to Osprey's usual high standard. I am quite familiar with King's Mountain, and somewhat so with Oriskany (thanks to DRUMS ALONG THE MOHAWK), but the Westchester material is new to me. The cover art fooled me a little; the dragoon is NOT Tarlington's, as I had assumed, but the Westchester Light Horse, raised by deLancy. I'll be interested to see whether the text mentions the interesting fact that Patriots and Loyalists reflected to some extent "ins" and "outs." The Livingston family were in power in the 1760s and supported Royal authority, while the deLancys supported challenging it. Then the deLancys pushed the Livingstons out, as the revolution was beginning, whereupon the delancys became Loyalsts and the Livingstons Patriots. But it could easily have been the reverse. Local animosities and rivalries were more important than the grand issues of Revolution. |

Good point about who sided with whom. Very true of many civil wars, but interesting to hear about it in the context of the American Revolution. |

Seems odd to me that while they apparently include Kings Mountain the other focus seems to be in the northern theater. I am somewhat familiar with the Revolutionary War history of Westchester County and while there may have been some ongoing patriot v. loyalist clashes after 1777 the bulk of the patriot v. loyalist action was in the south, North Carolina and South Carolina. |

I think I need to get this title. I live only a few miles from Oriskany. It is perhaps my favorite battle of the AW!. |

oldnorth, yes, I had anticipated more of a southern focus. |
