All right what do you do? A nice black, or even a dark gray (Grey), how do you wash it?

I can drybrush it but… it doesn't seem correct. How do you tone black?

There are a number of not- black black paints available,my favourite is RailMatch weathered black. Takes nuln oil well

I've been meaning to apply a white wash over black, for a number of years. I rarely have done a black cloak on a figure, so I've not had an opportunity to try it yet. I need to do that. I have a batch of Drow (dark, evil, subterranean) Elves in my painting queue. They would make perfect test subjects. I need to get working on them again… Cheers!

I don't.

I usually paint it matte black, then drybrush with gloss black…

I use Payne's Gray instead of black. Then if you want to shade you can use a black wash.

I either paint gray and wash black, or paint black and dry brush with dark gray.

Doc X that sounds good

Yellow Admiral that was what I was thinking too.

I usually use a very dark grey and a black wash. Possibly highlight with dark grey.

I usually do primer white (although I should try priming black sometime), base coat very dark gray, wash black, and dry brush slightly less dark gray.

I use a Neutral, mid Grey and wash it black. The thickness of the wash dictates how dark the results are. I then highlight in dark grey.

Very Dark Purple wash might be what you are looking for.

Random Die Roll that's interesting. I think I will experiment with it.

This.
Payne's Gray is a translucent dark blue grey. If you put it on straight it is a dark near-black; if you thin, it becomes a bluish gray glaze.

Before I found Payne's Gray, I would use midnight blue or dark purple then wash black over it.

A very dark green can be used the same way.

I paint it black then dry brush it.

mjkerner24 Feb 2022 9:39 a.m. PST

Another vote for Paynes Gray. Wash and highlight optional.

dragon6 Supporting Member of TMP24 Feb 2022 4:32 p.m. PST

Martin Rapier what do you dry brush it with?

doc mcb25 Feb 2022 11:47 a.m. PST

Prime black then dry brush white. Then paint as usual. Cover with min wax dip and then spray Dullcote.

I find that not all blacks are equally, er, black. So a lighter black can be used for a highlight on a darker black.

I have to say I don't normally bother, except on horses, and then its a grey on black.
