My gaming buddy won't play Bolt Action. I'm ok with it. Looking for something comparable.

Well there are loadsa Skirmish rules out there. Folks are gonna suggest Chain of Command…and so on all of which are good rules. The big question is what was your mates objection to Bolt Action? This may narrow the field.

I still prefer Iron Ivan's Disposable Heroes its a lot less gamey list building when compared to Bolt Action.

The best part are WW2 minis are universal. You can play all the rules.

Chain of Command, Battlegroup, Blitzkrieg Commander and I Ain't Been Shot Mum are, IMHO, better options ( but then WW2 gaming is not my preferred period)

I adapted Spectre Operations for small unit tactical actions. More of an RPG feel. One of the best games I've played was a German recon element with a puma finding a Soviet platoon and T34 on a farm and being forced to engage.

Another vote for Battlegroup WW2.

"Fast Rules" ? It's old school, but has recently been reprinted. Might be too close to BA in feel to be acceptable.

I play Bolt Action for WWII skirmish. I tried Chain Of Command. I wouldn't recommend that as an alternative. Haven't tried the others mentioned.

Chuckaroobob18 Feb 2022 6:20 a.m. PST

My fav is Disposable Heroes.

I play Nuts!

Don't play Bolt Action at all. Did play it twice. Way too gamey and non-historical for my taste. Just my opinion. Lots of people love it.

Comes back to the question why not BA? Too gamey? My suggestion would be Chain of Command. Much better feeling of how a small unit action developed and awards good tactics.

My local group plays "Flying Lead" for all post-1900 gaming.

NUTS from Two Hour Wargames. They used them at West Point, and I consulted real combat veterans when designing them.

Another vote for NUTS. Been playing it forever. We actually play both it and Bolt Action.

In 28mm, those are our two. In 20mm we play Rapid Fire and Operation WW2, and in 15mm we play Poor Bloody Infantry. In 6mm we use Abtielung. It's obscure, but fast moving large armor battles are great with it.
