Viren and Essen both prospered after the war, and played a major role in the rebirth of the Navy. Essen's command of the Baltic Fleet was cut short by his death, but he did a great deal in the years prior to the war to develop the skills and leaders who would meet the Germans on equal terms in WWI. I have a French translation in my basement of his memoir describing his tenure in command of "Sevastopol" at Port Arthur that I keep meaning to translate into English, but it's a long way down the list of things to do. |
