Fascinating find! It seems like I've read that during this period, Christian and non-Christian symbols were both used sometimes. Put another way, the "Prince" may have been Christian, though not of the "Kill all the pagans" variety and was covering his bases--maybe Saint Christopher would need the coin or he assumed Saint Peter could be bribed for faster service or better accommodations in heaven. Or perhaps pagan cousin Bernie slipped it into the grave. (Yes, I'm deliberately being facetious here, but there was often some overlap between pre-Christian paganism and early Christianity.) Long ago, so who knows. Grelber |

Nice post, thanks! The Sutton Hoo burial is as confused as regards religion. |

Even today, we don't have to look far for symbols and customs that relate to beliefs and superstitions that have may well pre-date Christianity. The adoption of Christian beliefs was not a cut-and-dried ideological transformation. |

Old Church yards in the UK often have a particular tree that's much older than the Church indicating a place of worship before anyone was Christian in those parts…and they deliberately kept the tree. |
