I love contrast paints.

But the cost of spray cans of wraithbone basecoat is through the roof. Are there other alternatives that work well with contrast paints? (I have access to an airbrush if that helps)

Contrast paints work just fine over any primer/basecoat.

In essence they are just highly pigmented washes. I use them over Gesso as well.

True, any primer will work, but you will get different results depending upon the finish. Gesso, for example, has quite a bit more "tooth" than the GW stuff, so you'll get less of the contrast effect and more color on higher areas. Rustoleum works fine and I recommend the 2X ultra-flat.

Just as an aside, if you are not already using the zenithal priming trick, you should give it a try. Works a treat w/ contrast paints.

What everyone else says.

1. Any white will do and the different shades give different effects.

2. Non white also works. I have used light browns or tan colors too for darker paints.

3. Zenithal priming enhances the overall effect but the whole point of contrast paints are to make things easier and avoid an extra step

4. But I still dip my figure at the end. I just use a lighter and more fluid dip to do it.

5. The bottom line is to experiment. I like the contrast paints for feathers and the like. I'm using them for Mayans and they will be excellent for Aztecs too. Not sure if I would use them for the 95th Rifles though.

I have used Army Painter Skeletal Bone as an alternative. A bit darker than Wraithbone, but it does the job with contrast paints.

Any primer will do as long as is is smoothly applied…
like with an airbrush or a less toothy type of rattle can.
A quick application of varnish will also help create a smooth surface but not really neccessary.
Check out The Hobby Cheating tutorial by Vince Venturella on contrast paint use…super helpful as are all of his tutorials!
