I think a compelling story is a very important part of the story. I've been discussing this topic with friends and we've all come to the conclusion that everyone does it differently. I often use inspiration from military books I've read, and if I don't have time to read them, I use the https://freebooksummary.com/category/the-samurais-garden summary samples service for example samurai garden. That way you can read a lot of stories in a short time and get a lot of new ideas.
