In Harper's Fighting the French Revolution: The Great Vendée Rising of 1793, he mentioned the Legion Du Norde had light blue coats with green trim and an unusual "Henry IV style hat". What exactly is a Henry IV style hat (I'm imagining a small tophat)? I need to find a good proxy in 10mm. Thanks so much.

I've always understood, rightly or not, that it is 'like' those of North Western France (ie Brittany environs) common type of hat- round top and wide floppy brims etc.
These are the types worn by 'the common people and farmers' and later the religeous counter-rev groups.
I think you'll see them in Rev. illustrated books.

A pic of him shows it in the Renaissance style:

There are pictures of Henri IV on line wearing a top hat reminiscent of that worn by Napoleonic Spanish militia. I would have thought that if the unit wore floppy hats (as did their Vendee opponents) these would not have been described as being unusual. Regards Alan

I think, in the early 1790s, the "chapeau à la Henri IV" was a kind of cylinder, with an enlarged flap on the left side which was folded up and fixed to the corpus.

Here an interpretation of this hat by Bernard Coppens:

Thanks for the assistance gentlemen. Much appreciated. I might have to find some Spanish or Swedish infantry as proxies and do a bit of conversion to get them looking relatively similar.

Austrian Jagers may be your go-to for that?

"I sculpted them like this – Perry plastic conversions"

I missed the "I sculpted"and thought them Perry masters or prototypes.
Amazing workmanship !
Thank you for posting the images.

Thanks for the feedback gents. Incredibly valuable. I think I will take Murvihill's advice and use Magister Militum 10mm Austrian jager's as they have bayonets and matching poses. I will paint them up as depicted in the image Michman provided.

Very nice sculpting von Winterfeldt.

Cheers!
