I've been painting up my newly acquired HeroQuest fantasy figs, and I'd like to store them in the original boxes. They come in a vacu-formed plastic tray thing that I'm concerned will scratch the paint, especially as the shaped molded slots are very tight. So I'm looking for a good foam insert solution, hopefully with "knockout" perforated blocks so I can secure the minis and toss the plastic trays. Any reccs? |

What you want is called pluck foam. Basically foam cut with 1/2" removable blocks so you can "pluck" to make custom wells shaped for each mini. They come in a variety of sizes and depths: link |

A clever use of pluck foam that I saw (and mimicked) didn't lay the figures down. Instead, a thicker block, which usually costs about the same as a thinner block, was plucked to allow the figures to stand upright. Many more figures per square foot, at a small increase in cubic foot volume. |

Barring pluck-foam, you can get a foam cutter, and custom cut what you need into a block of 'solid' foam. Cheers! |

After consulting several sites and having my jaw drop at the prices for foam— even uncut— I resolved to make my own. I don't really need it to be form-fitting, as I don't intend for the game to travel far (if ever). I went to Joann's and acquired some 0.5" cushion foam scraps at a discount. I plan to cut these into strips from which I will build a basic lattice of cells to fit in the box. I'll line the bottom of the box with soft packaging material, place the lattice of foam above it, and Robert is your mother's brother. I also sprang for a sheet of heavy poster board, which I will trim, fold and glue into trays to replace the vacuum-formed plastic the game comes with, allowing me to continue to use the original printed cardboard cover sleeves. Total cost less than $8. USD |
