"Sweden's military said on Thursday it was ramping up its visible activities on the Baltic Sea island of Gotland amid increased tensions between NATO and Russia and a recent deployment of Russian landing craft in the Baltic. Moscow has spooked the West by massing troops near Ukraine, sparking fears that it is considering invading. Moscow denies any such plans, saying it can deploy forces on its territory however it chooses…." link Main page link

Seems like a very prudent move, given Russian actions and threats in the past, and ongoing tensions even now. |

Whay would Russia invade Gotland |

Personally I'm more interested in Mayorka, Hawaii or in the worst case, Cyprus or Malta. Gotland is not that different from other Baltic places with typical coast weather. |

"Whay would Russia invade Gotland" It's former Russian territory (it's bounced around), it's a pretty easy target (like the Falkland, easy to grab), and it's long been a strategic location to dominate the upper Baltic (stick long-range SAMs and anti-ship missiles on it and you cause a lot of problems). |

Come on, Gotland was Russian for a couple of weeks during Napoleonic wars and that's it. Unlike Falklands it is not in the middle of nowhere close to your border and far away from its former owner. We have Kaliningrad enclave serving the same function without a potential of starting WWIII ( unlike Gotland occupation) |

Good intel Barin … So short answer IMO, Sweden is just being prudent. Regardless … highly doubt WWIII is start over this little island. |

My apologies, Barin! I was thinking about Aland, which has been far more contested. |

Gotland is in a far more strategic position than Kaliningrad. Also Russia have a recent history of getting into a scrap with its neighbors, Georgia in 2008, Crimea in 2014 and most recent parts of the Ukraine. So it might be prudent to prepare some defense when Russia stacks up with troops. Troops from Norway could transit through Sweden to Gavle and the go by ship to the Estonia, Latvia or Lithuania without units in Kaliningrad could do much. If there were no troops on Gotland Russia just might put some troops there as a "peacekeeping" force. Now they will at least have to fight for it… |

Troops from Norway could transit through Sweden to Gavle and the go by ship to the Estonia, Latvia or Lithuania without units in Kaliningrad could do much. Well I'm sure the RN would step up to help their NATO partners for such an operation. Oh, wait they have more pressing matters…. bbc.co.uk/news/uk-60021252As the article says we do have a Border Force and we also have a coastguard (but they apparently unnecessarily squeamish about not assisting people at sea in distress allowing them to drown). |

Did Putin forget the Cold War is over ? No … wait … no it's not !!! |

He's wanting to restart it, and already has, since he didn't like that they lost so badly a few decades ago. Ronald Reagan, the brilliant economy major, broke them financially, since they couldn't keep up with our weapons development and production programs, which of course, is why he embarked on them in the first place. |
