Partial answer from L von Sichart "Geschichte der Königlich-hannoverschen armee" Volume 5 pages 16, 34 & 35 all to do with the KGL (6,000 men): Heavy Dragoon regiment Hussar Regiment Light battalion 1st to 4th line battalions Horse artillery battery 1st to 3rd Foot artillery batteries See TMP link for leads. I am afraid Nafziger's OoBs doesn't have the answer. From Fortescue Volume 5 page 286: KGL 4,808 4 companies 95th Rifles 400; Brigade of Guards 2,000; 1st Regiment Cavalry KGL 575; 4th, 14th, & 23td foot 2.800; 2 brigades of artillery 300. Page 294 has a 2nd division arriving on the Weser on or before 1st January 1806: Major-General Sir Arthur Wellesley's Brigade 3rd foot – 590 8th foot – 447 36th foot – 657 Major-General Fraser's Brigade 26th foot – 438 28th foot – 968 91st foot – 508 Major-General Sherbrooke's Brigade 5th foot – 480 27th foot – 251 34th foot – 402 Royal Artillery 3 companies with horses R.E. Detachment Only reference to Russian troops is that they were led by Tolstoy…. GLEANINGS FROM THE CATHCART MSS. PART V.—THE YOUNGER PITT'S LAST VENTURE: THE EXPEDITION TO HANOVER, 1805-1806 C. T. Atkinson Journal of the Society for Army Historical Research Vol. 30, No. 121 (SPRING, 1952), pp. 22-29 (8 pages) jstor.org/stable/44218370 has a theoretical BEF which didn't happen – Cathcart proposed: 2 strong divisions of cavalry (one of 3 brigades of heavies under Lord Pembroke, the other of 2 brigades of light dragoons under Lord Rosslyn) – 64 squadrons in all or 9.600 rank and file; The infantry – 4 battalions of Guards, and 40 of the line forming 7 divisions averaging 5,000 strong, plus a Light Brigade under Moore of 4 battalions (3 later on in the Light Division in the Peninsular plus one of the 60th); 6 brigades of horse and of foot artillery; 5 companies of the Royal Staff Corps; 6 troops of the wagon train.

Thanks, but only interested in the Russian regiments that went. Only mentioned the Brits out of courtesy… as you say, they hardly get mentioned… -d |

Just a super-quick first "look" to get you started : not detailed, not double-checked, etc. There was also a Swedish detachment . Overall the Anglo-Swede-Russian forces did rather well with a complex operation Corps of Lieutenant-General Graf P.A. Neverovsky Staff : General-Kvartirmeyster Berg, Brigade-Major Graf Vorontsov, Fligel-Adiutant Benkendorf Fleet : Admiral Yegor Yegorovich Tet (George Tate) (12 liners, 8 frigates, 140 transport/supply ships) His Majesty's Life Cuirassier regiment : ~4 squadrons (~600 all ranks 16 September / 483 all ranks 30 December) Courland Dragoon regiment : 5 squadrons (933 all ranks 30 December) Izium Hussar regiment : 10 squadrons (1,697 all ranks 30 December) Frolov Don Cossack regiment : 5 hundreds (570 all ranks 30 December) Grekov-17 Don Cossack regiment : 5 hundreds (641 all ranks 30 December) Protopopov-1 Don Cossack regiment : 5 hundreds (563 all ranks 30 December) Ural Life-Cossack hundred : (118 all ranks 30 December) Pavlov Grenadier regiment : 3 battalions (1,909 all ranks 30 December) Saint-Petersburg Grenadier regiment : 3 battalions (2,240 all ranks 30 December) Belozersk Musketeer regiment : 3 battalions (2,026 all ranks 30 December) Ryzan Musketeer regiment : 3 battalions (1,937 all ranks 30 December) Kexholm Musketeer regiment : 3 battalions (1,939 all ranks 30 December) 1st Jäger regiment : 3 battalions (1,383 all ranks 30 December) 20th Jäger regiment : 3 battalions (1,529 all ranks 30 December) 3rd Marine regiment : Commander A.Iu. @Michman, Excellent finds. |

@prince d'Essling Thank you, but "Meh" …. it is only a "first look" – there are issues requiring more study. Example : Grekov-17 Cossacks were 2 sotni (hundreds) at the start and Frolov-1 was 5 sotni. Witht he Ural Life-Cossack, 8 total sotni with 1,000 Cossacks. Up to 400 were drowned in a storm on 24 September (per Bekendorf). But the per-regiment reports are about 200 drowned. Later, Beckendorf recounts having only 600 remaining. So I think the drowning was less and the 400 number includes early campaign losses. But that is a guess. Protopopov-1 Cossacks were sent as replacements (5 sotni – 600 Cossacks), so we have a new total of about 1,200 Cossacks. I do not know when, likely in October. But that is a guess. The 30 December report (per Sokolov) is 1,892 all ranks, or about 1,800 Cossacks …. So it looks to me that not only was Protopopov-1 sent, but also 600 other reinforcements/replacements. But that is a guess. And trusting Sokolov without double-checking is also not "best practice". I do not have full names for any of these commanders. And these commanders did not all make the full campaign – there were acting commanders for whom I have not accounted. Example : Need to double check that the Jäger were in 3 "smaller-than-heavy-infantry" battalions, not 2 "full-size" battalions per regiment. Example : The cuirassiers were originally 5 squadrons, but a "platoon" were shipwrecked and spent the winter on some Heaven-forsaken ice-covered Baltic island. I did not look for which squadron(s) were involved or for an exact count. Example : Lots of the detail on artillery is per "Shtat" (establishment) and standard procedures. But that is a guess. Example : Was 3/3rd Marines on-board and not landed ? Back in Petersburg ? Landed separately? More generally : I skipped looking for the unit and sub-unit commanders and the adjudants for the generals. Graf Tolstoy split his force into an avant-garde, 2 "columns" and a cavalry detachment. A gamer can do his own split, but an historical OOB might show the actual organization used. And I used modern Russian spelling translated into Engliish. Less lazy would be to also give the correct names in Russian in the old spelling. Overall : "Meh" |

Thank you gents, very good see some data around this subject. Didn't mean to dismiss your entry Ian, was simply in a hurry as days wax and wane… I'm sure the accumulation will be handy for some and SHOULD promote another sphere of interest that is non-Napoleon based to some extent. I was interested to see where those Russian regiments that kept getting named but not appearing in the main armies, cheers d |
