I hate painting, but I really hate basing for some reason. I literally have 1,000 painted figures from 15mm to 54mm that need to be based. I have painted and then sold armies because I didn't want to base them. This month I am ordering bases and everything is getting mounted on stands. What is your dislike? |

De-flashing figures. Mold lines, peaks and points, extraneous blobs, air bubbles or pits that have to be filled, and other casting flaws. I hate them all, and I get really tired of correcting them. It takes endless hours of my free time I'd rather spend painting, decaling, modifying, basing, and otherwise making figures into gaming pieces. It's not Zen, it's just frustrating. - Ix |

De-flashing figs. I always miss something that I find after I have spray primed and am painting. I keep thinking I just need to slow the process but I still miss something with slowing and double checking. |

I agree, don't like the "deflashing" of figures. Jim |

Painting limbers, limber horses and crews they look good, but they are there for aesthetics in most games and all that painting and money could have gone to fighting figures, but I understand it. Horse holders and horses for dismounted Cavalry are the worst and I rarely ever paint them. Revisions to rules that force you to buy a new set of rules. If you bought the first set, you should get a supplement at a nominal fee, or a large discount on the new set. Blowing 40 or more dollars twice, thrice or more is ludicrous. |

I love painting, but hate basing. I'm not too crazy about cleaning up flash and mold lines. Inevitably, I will miss some flash or a mold line until after I primed the figure. |

I hate assembling/gluing metal figures. I especially hate when medieval/ancient figures are "spearmen" and don't come with spears and even worse when you have to drill a hole for the spear. |

Touching up after I've (hopefully) finished painting & before I ink a squad of minis. After spraying with primer I lightly glue a few figures spread out on a popsicle stick; when I think that I'm done painting & ready to apply a light brown or black wash I invariably find that I missed a boot, a plume, a sword hilt or some other minor details, thus I have to find the proper paint bottle & carefully complete the job before I can apply clear coat & base the minis. |

I don't like creating a large number of the same things, such as roads, fences, bocage hedges etc. lt's great when you have enough and never need to do it again, but the whole assembly line process is pretty tedious and unenjoyable. I'm currently making snake rail fencing for an upcoming ACW game, 70 feet completed 6 inches at a time with at least another 30 feet to go. It always amazes me how much more roads, fences and trees you end up needing as opposed to what you thought you would need |

1. De-flashing figs, especially uneven mold lines. There's no way to end up with a nice clean seam. And it's a PitB. 2. Painting through "loops"— say a figure is holding a sword in both hands, thus creating a "loop" with his arms and torso, which you have to paint the inside of, or reach through to paint an otherwise inaccessible area (which is nevertheless still visible). I invariably wind up putting paint on areas I don't want to put paint on when trying to reach through the loop. 3. Painting pointless details. Yeah, yeah, your company has a a great sculptor with amazing skills— but why is he putting buttons, buckles, clasps, skulls, etc., etc., in every frickin' nook and cranny (or behind loops— see above)? I can't paint that. Back off a bit, and create some "easy to paint" figures, using a few key details here or there, but not all over. (Fantasy figure makers are particularly egregious in this area. Seriously, guys, most people can't paint that small. Give us a break! Here's a clue— if it can't be seen from two or three feet away, looking down at an angle from above, don't put it on the figure. 4. Pointless assembly. Most of the time when I have to put a mini together, it's to add a detail that could have been sculpted into the figure from the start. (Mantic, for example, has cannons protruding from gun ports that have to glued into place on their Armada ships, which have absolutely no reason that I can see as to why they couldn't have been part of the ship hull to begin with.) If I wanted to do plastic modeling, I'd buy plastic modeling kits. I don't. Stop making me assemble things that don't have to be assembled. |

There's no part of the process I really dislike. I don't even dislike scrubbing acrylic paint or superglue out of my fingertips. I do prefer to avoid pointless assembly, and rarely buy figures that require assembly, pointless or not. (On the other hand, I do fair amount of kit-bashing.) |

Bookkeeping. "I'm charging that unit! Roll for morale" "OK, give me a minute. It's the 27th Legere. It had a starting strength of 36 figures, lost 20, which means it can't rally back past 32, with a morale plus for taking a standard, so…Oh, wait! That's not the 27th Legere. It's the 27th Ligne. Let me find their file…" After that, activation rolls, simultaneous movement, and the infamous One Big Die Roll to Decide Everything. Nothing involving figure prep gets above fifth place. |

LOL Robert -- remember WRG ancients ? Can move but not when archers are firing overhead, no interpenatration except calvary not lance armed unless accompanied by elephants or chariots, but not in woods or having routing friends within 3 inches, but not when within 6 inches of enemy advancing or on flank……. We had a blast with those rules though back in the 70s. Sometimes we would spend a half hour or more reading and re-reading a paragraph and still not figure it out. Those were the days. There were about 10 of us in Des Moines -- either dead or scattered now! Russ Dunaway |

Unit labels for specific games. But I think games plays better with them, rahter than using numbers, rosters etc. But I actually do not like painting figs!! I do a pretty decent job, but I get impatient to finish and get playing. Plus I get fussy and keep going back to correct minor things, as if I wanted to torture myself. May need a therapist. |

Prepping figures that have excessive flash or mold halves that don't fit together so there's a honking big seam down the middle of the face or the body that is virtually impossible to remove without also removing a lot of detail. This especially applies to figures cost in worn out molds and plastics can be just as bad as the metals. Some of the early Minifigs were really bad about this. |

OK, so I seem to be the only one who dislikes painting in general. Prepping, deflaashing, cleaning up mold lines, basing figures? No problem… But when I have to start painting, everything bogs down… The only army I ever really got done, were my 15mm WW2 Russians. For the moment I decided to just get stuck in and build and base my backlog of figures. At least that way I can get some gaming done… |

The main thing I hate is long lists of dice modifiers, give me a nice chart any day. Painting is fine, I like painting, although as others have mentioned, assembling plastic infantry is a tedious chore. Whoever thought that was a good idea? Least favourite painting job is irregular troops, followed by horses, so don't get me started on Gallic cavalry… Basing is the best bit! It means you are nearly finished and the chaps can all be lined up neatly in their storage boxes. |
Dagwood | 05 Jan 2022 8:58 a.m. PST |
Martin, My least favourite painting job is regulars ! 100 figures in the same pose is my idea of hell ! I've only done it once, and even then they weren't all in the same pose … So most of my armies are irregular, or regulars with variety (e.g., Greek shields). Basing is my least favourite task overall, though. |
