I've been trying to find some detail but almost everything I can find on the internet, and pretty much everything I have in print, concentrates on air warfare 1917/18. Hardly surprising, as this is the 'Golden Age' of dogfighting, but I have in mind an earlier campaign set in early 1916 at the end of the 'Fokker Scourge'.

Could anyone advise on British and German unit organisation and aircraft types for this period, or suitable reference works where I can find this detail please?

Many thanks,

Nick

For the French go to this excellent site:
link
hit the Les escadrilles …………. in each unit they have a breakdown of what each squadron was equipped with.

The French were the first to make pure fighter squadrons of N11s to counter the Fokkers.

The Brits were still using hodgepodge squadrons. Until they got together a DH2 squadron.

Osprey Nieuport 11/16 Bebe vs Fokker Eindecker is a good read.

Hello Nick,

E. R. Hooten, War Over the Trenches: Air Power and the Western Front Campaigns (2009) has two chapters covering aerial operations over Verdun and the Somme. It does not provide a detailed OoB, but it does give a good background context which would be very useful in setting up a campaign.

This is from the "Wings of War" forum. link It has the dates of service for all the aircraft so you should be able to determine what was available to each country. Doesn't give a detailed OB breakdown but might help.

you might try this, maxeagles.com This is for Blue Max game. The list has dates of use, also at the bottom of each plane sheet is service dates and a little extra info.

Boz,
Go to the Aerodrome Forum – theaerodrome.com/forum

and either search the discussion archives or join and post your questions. It is one of the finest reference sites on WW1 aviation on the web. The site had qualified researchers and informed participants from all the nations who fought in the war.

The depth and breadth of knowledge here is just phenomenal.

Thanks guys, much appreciated – some really good links which I'm checking out.

At the moment it looks like the forces facing off in my fictional Betancourt Sector in late 1915 will be:

'B' Flight, 76 Sqn. RFC: 2 x Vickers FB5, 4 x BE2c

Feldflieger Abteilung 8e, Deutsches Heer: 2 E.III Eindecker, 2 x Albatros C.I, 2 x Aviatik C.I

My son and I had a very enjoyable campaign set in 1917 last year, you can read about it here: link

Cheers,

Nick
