My latest blog post describes creating bases of "empty horses" for the dismounted dragoons in my Polish 1620s army. It includes the origin of the phrase "empty horses", how horses may have been tethered, and also how I made the horse holders swappable. See all of this, and more pics, here:

At first I read "Bring On The Dancing Horses"

I must confess that I too had an Echo and the Bunnymen moment with the title.

Very nice CtG.

Indeed the first thing I thought of when I read this was Echo and the Bunnymen!

I'm doing this from memory, but I think that you left out the best bit from David Niven's story. When Niven and Errol Flynn nearly fell off their horses laughing about the "empty horses", a very angry Michael Curtiz (who was fluent in various languages, but struggled at times with English) said something like " you a——holes think that I know f—- nothing, well I know f—- all". I don't think that would have stopped the laughter. Not sure how Flynn or Niven would have gone trying to direct a film in Hungarian.

David Niven was indeed a great man. His war service is noted.
I enjoyed his Bomber pilot film where he is judge on whether he can go into heaven. Old but good.

Peter Pig has used the moniker "empty horses" for riderless horses for the last 25+ years in tribute to Mr Niven .

Good phrase.

Thanks for all of the comments 👍.

Glad to see so many Echo and the Bunnymen, as well as David Niven, fans on the board!
