Hi all,
I'm looking for a completely different type of project to kick off 2022 with and thinking about an air game for Korea and/or Vietnam.
Be grateful for rules and miniatures recommendations and also any good books to get me started.
Many thanks and happy holidays to all

Check your Six rules with Armaments in Miniature 1/200 scale models works well for me

Thanks fantasise
Should have said I'm in the UK. The AiM range looks just what I want but I'm not going to get stiffed by UK customs so a no-deal annoyingly.

For Vietnam I'd recommend Check Your 6 – Jet Age rules and the 'Tonkin Gulf Yacht Club' Vietnam expansion. They give a great feel for Vietnam.

You can play using whatever sized minis you like. I use 1/600th which you can get in the UK from Tumbling Dice or Oddzial Osmy from Magister Militum. Oddzial Osmy seem more accurate models but they're made from really hard metal so can be quite hard to file or clean up.

I use Litko 20mm wide base stands with 3mm magnets on top of their standard 'poles'. I glue 2 x 4mm strips of 1mm thick 'garden wire' to the plane to give the magnets something to stick to.

I'd also recommend the boardgame Downtown for not just a great game on the Vietnam Air War but for also setting up your own CY6 dogfights. Downtown plays at a scale of 1 plane counter = a flight of planes, with 1 turn = a minute, so is at the mission scale.

You can download the Downtown rules and there is a Vassal module for it but physical copies can be hard to find.

For Downtown there's some good stuff on Boardgamegeek and also over on the Comsimworld forums.

An example of someone who's done their own hex map terrain to use with Miniatures is at here:

For some examples of my 1/600th scale planes I use for Vietnam Air games see the pictures attached to this post on Comsimworld:

Have heard many good things about Check your Six. I use Phantoms based off the old Mustang rules. You can't beat the price as they are free. They also have a free expansion for Vietnam.

I use Raiden 1/300 planes but being in the UK you might want a different scale.
It is a lot of fun! Here is an AAR from one of my battles

Whatever you chose enjoy!

Thanks Joe. Great blog.
A free set of rules is good for me. I can't seem to find a UK stockist of Check Your Six.
I'm also thinking of 1/300th just for a bit more detail. Heroics and Ros in the UK seem to do a good range. And i think Pendraken stock Raiden.
All the best

Dr B,

Try North Star Miniatures for UK CY6:

Missile threat is a very interesting set of rules. Not too crunchy and not too simple. I have been waiting for 3D printing STLs for this period but have not seen much yet.

Clash of Sabres rules is a great set, produced by QRF, but I believe it is out of print.

DB,

I do love the detail of the 1/300 ( or 1/285). Heroics and Ros makes some good models. MSD games has some as well but they are also US based. For the money Raiden are the best IMO. GHQ has amazing planes and they will run sales so I will grab them then. The nice thing about GHQ is they come with plenty of bombs and external tanks.
Phantoms is a good rule set. I expanded the critical hit chart so if you go that route let me know and I will send it to you.
Any way you go won't be wrong; enjoy!

You'll need to select the scale most suitable for your game, but if you're willing to pay for printing, you can fly on actual Defense Mapping Agency charts. You'll need to apply hexes if that's how you play.
