What a great website! Thanks for sharing the find. The narrative from the first sinking on Sept. 3, 1939, by Lemp in U-30, target SS Athenia. "A second torpedo had been stuck with running engines in its tube during the initial attack and the U-boat was in danger of being destroyed as the torpedo had timer detonator, but the crew managed to dislodge the stuck torpedo in time." I bet that was all kinds of exciting in the U-boat while the above item was removed. |

If you click on "on board" at the bottom it also shows what is known about some of the crew and passengers on the ships too. Pretty comprehensive information. |

Lots of good info on that site. I found the USS Reuben James, sunk Oct 31, 1941. Hardly anyone knows about the fact that Germany sank a US warship two months before Pearl Harbor. Now what I didn't know until I perused the site is two weeks prior to the Reuben James being torpedoed, the USS Kearney was hit by a single torpedo which killed 11, but failed to sink the ship. So two examples of hostile action before Germany declared war on the US. Roosevelt was criticized for placing American warships on Neutrality Patrols of convoys destined for Great Britain. From the German point of view, the action may have been warranted due to the destroyers dropping depth charges due to U-boat actions near a convoy, a hostile act from the German point of view. |

Not to put too fine a point on things, but Roosevelt's "Neutrality Patrol" was far from neutral. B |

Getting depth charged certainly is seen as a hostile act by the submariners, even more so then escorting supplies to an enemy. September saw the first recorded attacks by US naval forces upon submarines. The war was slowly escalating in the Atlantic anyway, which partly explains Hitlers willingness to declare war in december. |

"due to the destroyers dropping depth charges due to U-boat actions near a convoy, a hostile act from the German point of view." Would you consider this a "hostile act", I know I would. |
