Many years ago the magazine 'Miniature Wargames' had an article for running post war COIN/Internal Security campaigns. It had a number of trackers for popularity, insurgent activity, support for both sides, etc, and these would determine random encounters and events which, in turn, would lead to table top games… Does anyone remember these, and if so which issue they were in? If not, can anyone suggest anything similar? I'm idly considering small scale infantry combat in a British (North wales) 1970s setting, along the lines of 'Winter of '79'. Also could anyone suggest a decent set of simple, fun, flavourful squad-level rules for 2-8 figures a side? Many thanks, Nick |

I'm interested in what you find. I've got some rules but nothing with a progress/scenario chart. |

I think essentially the same rules were posted online. They appear to be still available via the waybackmachine at: link |

I should have added that for the skirmish rules take a look at TwoHourWargames. The rules flow well, and the figures will to some extent act and react on their own volition as things get going (though admittedly that's not to every gamer's liking). The core mechanics are very flexible and the customisation/RPG elements can be dialed up or down to suit your tastes, or to create 'characters' vs generic grunts. Best of all, the core mechanics are available free to try before you buy. link |

Darby Eckles (spelling) created "FNG Operations" as a battle generator for FNG by TwoHourWargames. FNG being their Vietnam rules. Operations had you set up a grid as your area of operations. You would go through phases each week, orders from higher up, resupply units in the field, improve your firebase, intel reports, etc. All of this would either increase or decrease the Estimated Enemy Activity in various grids. Your job was to manage the firebase and try to decrease that enemy activity. |

Brilliant! Cheers guys, that's really helpful. Seems that those suggestions could also work for Aden too which is another thing I've been considering. I'll check them out. Thanks, Nick |

Have a look at the Nordic Weasel rules of various shades e.g. No End In Sight or Fivecore Skirmish. He has excellent systems for this sort of thing. It's what inspired my Sandbox Skirmish Aden style project. |

Lol – It amazes me how our interests overlap Jim! I've also been considering Aden, but infantry patrols in the Crater District. I've been buying my dad a few pints to get him talking (he was there in the RMP from '64 to '66). Chatting to him I've managed to get loads of ideas for scenarios, from keeping the peace while waiting for the Aden Police to collect a detained thief to manning roadblocks searching for weapons. Loads of civilians about, from local youths throwing rocks, kids trying to cadge cigarettes and old women giving squaddies a hard time – and all the while the patrol has to try and keep an eye on every rooftop, window or shifty youth in case something 'kicks off'. I doubt I'll ever get anything done, but it's always nice to ponder different ideas. Nick |
