Greetings fellow Grognards,

I posted this on the 'Plus' Obituaries boards but since Dan Schorr was such an important figure in the American wargaming scene in fostering the popularity of the GNW during the 1980s and 1990s, I thought it important to post it here.

I searched TMP for this and seeing nothing, I thought I'd pass it along. It is with heavy heart that I report the following:

Dan Schorr, who many of you might have known from his 'Northern Wars' website and/or his articles in the old 'Courier' magazine and his work with me on the Poles in the Wars of Partition passed on August 10, 2021.

I first found out about Dan through Pat Condray and Dan and I started a correspondence that lasted 4 decades (and me moving to a different country). Dan was one of the most kind-hearted and knowledgeable wargamers I ever met.

He was an expert on the Danes, Swedes and Norwegians of the 17th and 18th centuries and his warmth and generosity in helping a 'Scandinavian' novice such as myself with too many questions was always what astounded me about Dan. He was into the GNW before there were miniatures or rules, he was also a retired Lt. Col. in the US Army and served his community in Harrison, Maine throughout his retirement from the service.

In short, Dan was a man and wargamer that all of us should aspire to be. Not only was he knowledgeable but he was patient, good-humored and, most importantly, a gentleman of the old school.

He will be sorely missed among the GNW/Scandinavian wargaming community.

My good friend – RIP.

I also found Dan to be a gentleman and enjoyed communicating with him. Am sad to hear of his passing. The hobby has lost one of its leaders.

Dan was a terrific guy. I corresponded with him quite a bit and purchased a few things from him. I even got to meet him at a Historicon a few years ago. Always a kind, literate gentleman. May he RIP.

I'm so sorry to hear this. Dan was an outstanding gentleman!

His knowledge of the GNW and 17th and 18th century Poland was astonishing!

He will be missed. I just looked at my emails and we first started corresponding back in August 2000!

That's very sad. I liked Dan and had fruitful discussions with him over the decades. Is there an actual obituary?

I only knew through his articles in the "Courier" and they were excellent. My condolences to his family and friends.

Dan was incredibly helpful and generous with his time.I was very sad to hear of his passing. I know he was still gaming and modelling very shortly before he passed as we were corresponding about naval gaming with the Danish fleet. A great loss to the community and everyone whose life he touched.

Hey Dave,

I found two obits:

I apologize to the TMP community but I was wrapped up with various things and had lost track of Dan's emails. I sent an email to his address in October, when I didn't get a reply, I started to worry but my university started back and I got caught up with work (again!). So, when I had some 'downtime', I started searching and with the EU(SSR) regulations on personal info being what they are – it's very difficult to access newspapers from the States if you live in the EU(SSR) sometimes.

There might be other obits but those 2 are the ones I found that I could access.
