The Thirty years war will be my new project next year and i will be starting of with the cavalry so i was wondering if any of the community could give me any pointers to online or book references that provide good info or colour images for the Standards used by the cav(all nationalities)
I will be using the printed ones that are available from battleflag and flagsofwar but they are rather limited in scope.
Also any info on the colour of sashes would be appreciated.
Thanks

Helion is my go to book store, they have tons of great books and a lot of them have color plates. You should also join several of the Facebook groups for these periods very helpful members.

Flags – if you are serious, and have the cash, then the German language Fahnen und Standarten series is the answer. Don't worry you don't need any German language skills to understand them.

Not going to be cheap I'm afraid.

Sashes – I could bore you to death about British Civil War scarves (correct period term), but know diddly squat about 30YW.

Hi Chris, it can help with your research to narrow the whole period of the war down to one of the major phases. When I started looking at it I focused on the entry of Sweden in to the war and the classic clashes between Gustav Adolf against Tilly and Wallenstein.

I echo Irish Marine's suggestion on Helion books.
"In the Emperor's Service" has lots of info on Wallenstein's Imperial army.
"The Bavarian Army During the Thirty Years War" is also good covering the other main Imperial army.
There are two volumes of "The Lion From the North" covering the Swedish armies, early and late.

All of these include some info on flags but for most units they are unknown. KYPD's suggestion looks interesting and you'll find most of the known flags are the ones available from places like Flags of War.

On sashes; Wallenstein mandated red sashes for his army, so that gives some guidance there. Other than this it is difficult to tie down hard and fast rules. I tend to use blues, greens and yellows for my Swedes and allies, but this is informed artistic license as much as anything.

Hope this helps? Do you have a period or phase of the war that your most interested in?

Thanks a bunch for your input guy's, much appreciated.
I will take a look at the Helion books, they seem the best bet book wise.
Charge the guns, i was thinking the main focus will be the battles of Breitenfeld 1631 and Lutzen 1632 period.
Maybe in the future it would be nice to go for the French and Spanish period focusing on Rocroi 1643!

You're welcome, Chris!

That's a great period to choose and you should find information to help. You may be interested in my blog where I covered building armies for Lutzen 1632 (mostly in 2019 theviaregia.blogspot.com/).

The Osprey Campaign series book on Lutzen is also worth a look.

Nice Blog Charge The Guns, you really did a good job for the battle of Lutzen. I will put the Osprey book on my shopping list too.
Cheers.

There is also the excellent book of contemporary battle painting by Peter Snayers – again not cheap I'm afraid but beautiful.

Thanks for the links Billy, the artist is outstanding, those battle paintings are incredible. It is not looking cheap to collect books of the period!
