You were asked – TMP link Rate Historicon 2021 on a scale of 1 (lousy) to 10 (stupendous). Average result: 7.04 |
HMS Exeter | 02 Dec 2021 7:02 a.m. PST |
Seems a bit low. C- ? I'd have given it a full B. |
BTCTerrainman | 02 Dec 2021 7:10 a.m. PST |
Yes, but only 25 persons actually rated the convention experience….. |
Martyn K | 02 Dec 2021 7:20 a.m. PST |
25 ratings out of 1600+ (?) attendees is not really statistically significant. Also, given some of the negative comments on these boards by people who didn't attend, I am wondering how many of the 25 actually attended Historicon. With the current situation, it was always going to be impossible to have an A+ experience. Also, it is well known that the venue has some layout limitations and these were coupled with some staffing issues. But even considering all of that, I would say that convention went well. You can never please everyone, but the vast majority of the people that attended seemed to be having a great time. I know that I did. |

Has there been an official attendance figure announced for the con? Does anyone know for when the December HMGS(E) Board Meeting has been scheduled? |
dapeters | 02 Dec 2021 1:54 p.m. PST |
Careful Martyn let not let facts get in the way of what the membership wants. |
jefritrout | 02 Dec 2021 2:08 p.m. PST |
I can tell you that I indeed attended, and 7 was higher than I would have rated it. Best part was seeing old friend and talking with them, but in the dispersed area it was often difficult to find them. Looking at the link, I am one of the 26. |
McKinstry | 02 Dec 2021 3:57 p.m. PST |
I was there from Wednesday through Sunday and had a very good time. There were issues around food and finding things but given all the issues involved in pulling it off, I'd give it an 8. |
War Scorpio | 02 Dec 2021 5:54 p.m. PST |
I didn't attend because of the mask mandate, so I would rate it "0". Factor that in your numbers. I thought I read there were only 800 PreReg. Yes I'm interested in seeing the "Historicon" numbers. |
HMS Exeter | 02 Dec 2021 8:15 p.m. PST |
I was told at the desk there were 800 prereg. The printer 1000 con books and ran out. (I appear to have lost mine, curses) I've heard the total was 1500-1600. I have heard no definitive tally. |
historygamer | 02 Dec 2021 8:40 p.m. PST |
So 800 registered, they all showed up, then 700+ showed up day of? That's amazing. |
BTCTerrainman | 02 Dec 2021 8:45 p.m. PST |
I am certain I heard the number of attendees was north of 1500. Great show overall. |
Brian98 | 02 Dec 2021 9:07 p.m. PST |
Attendance was about 1,740. |
thor521 | 02 Dec 2021 9:31 p.m. PST |
Overall I rate it an 8 The con was a 10 The facility layout -1 Lack of staffing and restaurants -1 |
Rustycop Retired 2019 | 02 Dec 2021 9:36 p.m. PST |
I know Historygamer it's amazing. Tells you how everyone was craving a convention. |
TheKing30 | 03 Dec 2021 4:33 a.m. PST |
I'm light of all the challenges I would rate this convention an 8 of 10. I didn't like the facility or the food (that was addressed at the members meeting) but I'm amazed with how this was pulled off despite the obstacles. |

I've been to VFCC 3 times. Our 2 most recent cons and 1 of the Historicons of about a decade ago. It is improved since the older cons, thanks, I think, to the Casino. I think it could grow on us if we tried viewing it from a fresh perspective. It is spread out. I tried counting, and I think it's 450 steps between the 2 lobbies walking indoors. It's a bit shorter outdoors. Maybe I'm just adapting, but it didn't seem quite so burdensome this time. The gaming area is a confused warren of small rooms. But, once you worked out where everything was, the small rooms insured we had little to no issue with noise. Most, but not all were reasonably well lit. The tourney folks were in a big box echo chamber. I'm not a vendor, but I don't envy them access to the loading area. There is a somewhat curved one way ramp that goes down to a below grade rolling grill door that seemed to be both the way in and out. So, trailer rigs had to turn around indoors down there. I saw 1 trailer trying to get down while someone else was coming up. Being able to reverse a trailer rig uphill on a curve is not a skill everyone possesses. After 3 near Jack knifes I couldn't watch anymore. I have no solution here. I know there is a lot of shade cast at VFCC, and, to be sure, it's imperfect. One of the Little Wars guys was pretty definite that he would not go there again. I'm just not sure there aren't some positives we could try to factor into the equation. |

I thought the BoD had moved on from vfccc due to costs. |
TSD101 | 03 Dec 2021 5:39 p.m. PST |
I thought the BoD had moved on from vfccc due to costs. In light of rapid inflation, HMGS is going to have to take a hard look at the numbers. I assume the number of places that can handle the space needed while maintaining the current price point is rapidly dwindling. They're either going to have to change the way they manage space to fit in a smaller venue or raise prices. |
BTCTerrainman | 03 Dec 2021 7:33 p.m. PST |
The tunnel the vendors use has two entrances/exits. So anyone having to back up was due to error….Still not the best option for loading in/out especially on Sunday when everyone is trying to get packed/loaded. Not fun to wait on others when you are trying to get out an on the road. This year did work the best though, so great work by the staff. |

I went and give it an 8. Great meeting old friends again and catching up. I give the hotel a 4. The room was sat but the hotel service was nonexistent. |
TRUgamer | 05 Dec 2021 9:12 a.m. PST |
" So 800 registered, they all showed up, then 700+ showed up day of? That's amazing." Actually 940 walk up registrations according to HMGS numbers. TRU |

Was it ideal since we did not have our full Historicon numbers? No, but the fact that we had a convention during a pandemic was amazing in itself. It was great to see friends again, so I give it an 8. |
Rustycop Retired 2019 | 05 Dec 2021 10:12 p.m. PST |
I give Cliff Brucken a 10. |

It really did seem relatively well organized. Always appreciated the big conventions before, yet this year, after two years of none, it was a very good thing. Cheers to all who helped with this, the staff, vendors, and participants, even the hotel folks, thank you! |
Grumble87106 | 07 Dec 2021 8:31 p.m. PST |
It was great to be there, great to work with Cliff, and great to run games and have people show up to play. Oh, and I liked all the food -- which I bought ahead of time and took there myself. Happy for the fridge and microwave in the room. And, of course, being with all the people I hadn't seen in person since March 2020. |
