… THE 1950S "Man, I remember sitting at my old Dell laptop for hours on end playing Age of Empires 2. I was a wee lad and loved reaching the point of War Elephants. At that age, the only Hannibal I knew liked Chianti and gave me nightmares, but I also knew that these powerful pachyderms could help me destroy my opponent's meek little villages.
War elephants always carried a certain kind of mystique. Horse-bound calvary was boring, you put some mahouts (elephant riders) on elephants, though, and now you've got my attention. There were, of course, real war elephants these fictional Age of Empires beasts were based on. I mean the war elephants used in India, by Alexander the Great, by the Romans at times, and the Carthaginians. The context of these ages and the conflicts that littered them warrant entire books, so we can't cover that all here. Instead, let's take a serious look at war elephants and discuss how they really were historically used, along with the pros and cons of adding them to your wartime arsenal…" Main page link Armand

I've never been into PC games, far too addictive and a drain on dopamine IMHO. Also, nowhere near as relaxing and "Zen" as sitting at the painting desk- however, they flumps are always great fun to paint; you can really go to town on them. Just Add Water Wargamoinjg and Painting Blog: link |

I do remember the ridiculousness of AoE2. You had a population limit, but converted elements took your population above that number, with no penalty. I built a stone wall, put monks behind it and waited. The Persians started sending war elephants to attack the wall. The monks would convert every elephant before it even reached the wall. I ended up with a huge herd of elephants milling about. I also figured out that if you created a zigzag path of wooden palisade, the enemy would always try to walk through it rather than attack the wall itself. Archers behind the palisade would use the attacking troops as target practice at no risk to themselves. It was about then that I stopped playing computer games . . . |

Hmmm, "it's not terribly easy to see why war elephants had a relatively brief existence in antiquity tactics." From "India, by Alexander the Great" to "the 1950s". So over 2,000 years is "relatively brief". Cheers, John |

Ancients games without berserk elephants (or at least the change of them) are boring. |
