I spent a very pleasant day yesterday in the company of friends travelling up to Ascot to attend this year's Warfare show presented by the Wargames Association of Reading.

The venue was very nice and with plenty of room to host the traders and games without forcing visitors to rub elbow to elbow to see what was on show.

As usual, as well as recounting the day I have included a review of the games that caught my attention, so if you would like to know more then just follow the link to the blog.

Nice collection of pictures.

Not too many masks worn.

You guys have some really interesting venues.

Almost no one was wearing a mask on saturday

Thanks to our scaremongering prime minister almost everyone was wearing a mask on sunday

Will no one accept that the masks that 99.9% of people wear are at best worthless and according to many experts do much more harm than good

No. We live in an age of pointless gestures.

Was wearing a mask a problem? Did people being considerate about the well-being of others somehow spoil your day?

Someone really needs to tell all those surgeons and all the professional health workers who wear masks every day how foolish they are!

Different masks, Bob, and worm way more assiduously than most people wear theirs.

ConnaughtRanger28 Nov 2021 11:57 p.m. PST

And not worn to "prevent" virus transmission.

Interestingly in june 2020 my wife had to go into hospital to take a phone to my mother who was a patient.
She was worried and wore a mask.
Not one single member of staff in the entire hospital that she saw was wearing a mask of any sort.

You would think those doctors and nurses would know whether there was any point in wearing those masks.

Please note June 2020 was before mask wearing in the UK was compulsory, though many were already wearing them

CptKremmen29 Nov 2021 2:53 a.m. PST

Bob, no the people wearing masks did not ruin my day and I guess they felt happier wearing them.

It was a good show, hope everyone enjoyed it either with or without their masks :)

Geographical note for your Blog JJ.

"leafy west London" actually ends at the M25.

Ascot is in "Leafy East Berkshire", or the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead if you prefer! 😄

BTW: If the word on Farnborough International Exhibition and Conference Centre, for next year, comes true that will be North East Hampshire and just a little weird!

Thanks for your comments chaps.
I always expect a post about Warfare to generate quite a bit of comment as I think a lot of us really care about this show and its future, but I think even I was a bit surprised that masks, the to wear or not wear debate and their overall efficacy would form such a large portion of the comment.

That said it does indeed seem that Farnborough will be the new location for next year and Trajanus, you'll have to excuse my loose use of the description ‘Leafy London' as I can well remember large parts of Leafy Surrey and North Kent that have now been consumed by the ever growing boundary of Greater London and the determination to erode the green belt. So get ready to find Mayor Khan's and Commissioner Cressida Dick's tanks parked outside Ascot any day soon!!

Cheers
JJ

Don't know about people's territorial ambitions but I can tell you that all the London Boroughs are inside the M25, with the exception of part of the London Borough of Havering (North Ockenden).

In fairness, it also includes small bits of Surrey, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire, Essex and Kent.

I've never worked out if its to keep Greater London residents in, or everyone else out!

I attended on Saturday. Not overly impressed. parking was on soggy grass, a bit of a risk at this time of year. The venue looked impressive from the outside, but the inside was narrow, and the huge escalators to the upper floors ensured the inner stands were quite dark. Whole place was very cold. Where it perhaps scored was masses of space for the various tournaments for individual rule sets. The previous site was certainly too small, I hope that next year's show at Farnborough will be better. Certainly, in my opinion, was nowhere near as good as Colours at Newbury

ConnaughtRanger03 Dec 2021 8:52 a.m. PST

I would have to agree that in a contest between "Racecourse Grandstands that host Wargames Shows", Newbury would come out way ahead.
Mind you, I only have experience of York, Newbury and Ascot!

Trajanus05 Dec 2021 6:47 a.m. PST

I guess nowhere is perfect. I always found the Trade area at Newbury over crowded, if you went on the Saturday, when it was a two day show.

As I posted elsewhere, the weather did the organisers no favours at Ascot where Newbury generally had fine weather, in the several years I attended, both as a punter and Display gamer.

As for parking, developers did Newbury a massive favour in recent years with miles of hard space being available. Not something Warfare could match.

Soggy grass?

How about the year at Newbury when they had people (including me) park in the actual centre of the track area and it became a devil take the hindmost event, to force your way out and reach to cross the sheeting laid over the track itself, before getting bogged down! Cars were all over the place.

A whole new meaning to "Heavy Going"

As a one off event, in a venue they had never used, in and around Covid, the Warfare organisers did a great job!
