We have decided to embark on a New period, Several of us have played Napoleonics in the past but as a new group. We have decided to start again. Is there any reason we cant just start playing General de Brigade in 28mm with the frontages from the book. we have a 25ft by 5ft table so the only isue is depth of table, we assume that this can be covered by of table manovure? how do current 28mm Napoleonic players play? is General de Brigade suitable? is there a beter option? regiments being the base unit for moving etc? cheers jon |

I'm also a relatively new player when it comes to big napoleonics games, as until recently I only played skirmish napoleonics. My experience is that most rules can be used with most basing styles, as long as you have roughly similar widths for both sides and some imagination. For example, we tried Lasalle 2 first, which assumes that each unit (battalion) is four bases, but it works just fine with our six based battalions if you just adjust the rules slightly. As long as you base all armies somewhat similar, it's more of an aesthetic and practical issue than a rules issue IMHO. Go with what you like. 25 x 5 feet should be more than enough if you're not angling to play something ridiculously huge. We tried with a 6 x 4 table and found out that it worked for a small game, but would be more fun with a slightly bigger table. But then more width would be of higher priority than more depth IMHO. So 25 x 5 should be just fine. |

We use GdeB for Napoleonic and War of 1812 games. The recommended GdeB basing is fine. For example, for the British most tend to have four figures per company 40mm x 40mm MDF bases. However, to me that seems almost an open order look so, I tend to have four figures on a 30mm company frontage x 40mm deep to give that shoulder to shoulder dressing, which was the norm. My militia figures are based on 40mm by 40mm bases to give that loose formation look. BTW, GdeB is a great set of rules. |

Both rules, scale and dimensions of bases can be ignored as irrelevant detail, as long as you agree how bases are 'lined up'. Given that, plug on with whatever rules you choose to, it is after all a hobby, not a government or religeous directive on "thou shalt" perform this way or that. Most of us would dream of such an expanse to play with, all the best, davew (45+ years Grognard___) ≠ |

There probably aren't too many rules that won't work with a table of that size. |
