Whilst reading about the battle of Adrianople, I've come across references to a fortified farm. I thought this would make a good terrain piece to go with my 15mm Late Imperial Roman army but I'm really struggling to find any pictures of what it might have looked like. The only similar thing I can find is references of a network of fortified farms in the Limes Tripolitanus and, even assuming that the example near Adrianople would have been similar, I can only find pictures of a few remaining walls. I wondered if anybody on here can point me in the right direction please? link |

A factor mot covered in those excellent links is how much time do the Romans have to fortify their villas. I'm sure in many cases the barbarian onslaught was unexpected which would have affected the nature of the defenses. |

There are a couple of print-and-assemble Roman villa models available at link Mayhaps some copypasta in Paint.Net and/or Irfanview, and some additional walls, will produce what you want. These used to be available at WargameVault.com. but are not available there now (why, I know not) (but if you purchased the files from the Vault earlier, you can still download copies) Hope this is helpful. |

Great question. I've got the Grand Manner Roman Villa that would stand in nicely:
Though looking at the fist image ChrisBrantley posted I might well be tempted to add to my collection and scratch build a more square looking villa that has a kore fortified look. My Just Add Water Painting and Wargaming Blog: link |

Thank you very much, those links are very helpful. I wonder now whether the fortified farm mentioned in the case of Adrianople was just a villa of the type shown in some of those links with buildings facing inwards and a strong wall rather than a small fort in the style of the Libyan gsar in the first link. Either would work, I think, as a piece of wargames scenery and table decoration for the Adrianople demo game. smallitalianwars.blogspot.com |

I believe only the second floor was fortified, and the Goths where able still set fire to it. One Roman jump and was captured, he telling the story of Valen death. This according to MacDowell. |
