You were asked – TMP link

The U.S. military is said to be once again evaluating the use of gas-filled airships, partially due to new technology which makes hydrogen safer to use. Do you foresee military airships in the future?

41% said "no, military airships are not the future"
27% said "yes, military airships are the future"
21% said "yes, but only for transports"

Will they be battery power ?

Andrew Walters18 Nov 2021 10:32 a.m. PST

I think aerostats are going to be important. Airships are really easy to shoot down, even from a great, great distance. Slow moving, tremendous radar cross section. Show me a stealthy zeppelin and I'll reconsider.

From what I've read, they can be great cargo movers over rough/inhospitable terrain in "safe" areas (ie. places where the risk of getting shot up is minimal).

Yes to batteries at some point when the weight ratio makes sense. Large surface built in collection panels for solar. Could ease truck traffic on highways in ten years, far more fuel efficient direct route transport, could easily be flown as drones.

But not for military until the Klingon cloaking device comes on line.

They need to reconsider the hydrogen thing. The Hindenburg comes to mind…

In an Afghanistan scenario where you have complete air superiority they would make sense as long term observation platforms. Same for naval patrolling…

I think they would be way to easy to shoot down, various SAMs would do it and they have no evasive action capabilities. Only the Klingon cloaking device could save them.

Hydrogen! Let's add some flapping wings for lift too!

Solar power is a reality, the tech is growing quickly, and air ships can access it easily. None of the arguments against it or the other renewables are insurmountable. The only real obstacle is the greed of the fossil fuel industry, which we need for now as the transition to other energy requires major grid and storage changes. But as our infrastructure is badly in need of repair, grid visionaries are already at work in the private sector, where the changes are coming from.

No expert … but tech has advanced since the Hindenburg …
