Any thoughts on minimum range for M106 mortar carrier? And/or effective 'burst radius'? |

Much obliged Wolfhag – a very quick browse suggests 400m minimum range, but maybe I've missed something. |

Well I think there are many factors that come into play that maybe some real mortar men can expound on. Heavy mortars almost always depend on an FO as they cannot observe indirect fire. It may also be for the friendlies to be out of the way of short rounds which do occur. I'm not sure of the shortest range they could fire based on their maximum elevation and minimum charge. I have seen other published minimum range of 180m, 400m may be for range safety in peace time. I think that if you have to engage an enemy with 120mm mortars at 200m you are in a pretty dire situation to begin with. Wolfhag |

The M-106 used the M=30 107mm mortar not the 120mm. The minimum range is 840 yards. vietvet.org/arty.htm Kill radius is about 30 meters |

Cheers for both of you – further reading suggests 400 could be achieved at a pinch, but 840 was the normal minimum, so I think there'll be a bit of work on my wife's Corgi M106s – she can fill them up with figures to hide the mortar. |

Due to the way the mortar and base were constructed, I do not think the elevation sleeve could elongate enough to raise the tube enough to drop rounds any closer, unless you parked on an incline. |

Major Mike, At max elevation and 0 charge what range would the round have if you needed to use it in an emergency? Would it end up too close to the shooter? Wolfhag |

81mm mortar in the M106 is 75 meters range Regards Allan |

Wolfhag, the problem that arises at max elevation and charge 0 is that the round may not spin enough to arm before striking the ground. Although I have crewed a 4.2 many years ago, much that was learned has faded. The manuals list the minimum ranges for each type of available round. The FM states in paragraph 6-30 that an Illumination round has a minimum range of 400m. But, the manual always hedges things on the side of safety. link |

Cattle Dog – was it a common use of the M106 to carry a 81mm? |
